FANTASTIC FOUR #11 by Ryan North, Pat Boutin, Serge Lapointe, Edgar Delgado & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With his time with the FF, North has pushed the fantasy boundaries while honing in on the family dynamic. After a devastating foe pushed them to the brink, the mood shifts to the future and what does that entail. The writing shows Reed Richards trying to steer the conversation, but is met with pushback from Johnny Storm. This winds up opening the door for the true heart and soul of the MCU to take the moment.

Ben Grimm’s look at the world has always been without influence. Grimm has represented the everyday person striving to make the world better. His dialogue with Alicia shows his self doubts on standing. It also opens a lock on his own thoughts that grows as the conflict with Doom tech begins. This portion is very straight forward in execution. It serves to build up more in the background. The main event here is Grimm’s decree for the future. The writing is exceptional in conveying his thoughts. It leads to a proclamation onto where the future is really going for the First Family and beyond.

Readers are also gifted a back story by the legendary Stan Sakai. It is everything you could ask for from the incredible creator in dealing with these characters. Art and story are excellent.

The art team shows the family squabbling taking over conversation. Reed’s banter with Johnny is met with friction on each panel. This allows Ben Grimm to step away and gather his thoughts. The panels with Alicia allow him to open himself up. Readers watch as he contemplates what the future is holding. Seeing this personal side serves to segway easy into the main conflict at hand. Plus who’s not excited to see some dinosaur action?

“Crimeasaurus Rex” makes a splashy debut via half panel. This provokes the Four to take action. Their varying reactions to this figure is a humorous nod before the action starts. Grimm’s panels break down the cause of issues before sending him to clobber. It resolves into a solid half panel. From here, the spotlight goes back on Grimm. His speech planning shows the heart he carries for the future. The two page images to match the speech jump out as a reflection of his views. This builds up to a defining moment between him and Alicia. The finla page is a perfect send-off for where events need to leap from this point.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

Who knows what the future holds for Marvel’s First Family? The answer may surprise as a new beginning starts for the FF! North lets one character reassure everyone why they are the heart and soul of the MCU. The art team shines in bringing out the best of this character. This run has been nothing short of exceptional, perfectly fitting for the World’s greatest comic magazine!
