Guggenheim and Morello puts Smalls into his most personal conflict yet. The writing jumps in to where the ship has lost power. it crafts an unsettling mood as Smalls knows what this could mean for their chance to be free. One name keeps appearing on his mind as a saboteur. Readers quickly find out that the accusation is far from validated. This spirals into a standoff to buy Smalls and crew more time. It also ushers in the true culprit behind their recent woe.
Ana’s discovery of who stopped the ship is met with immediate pushback. The argument over the protection of family proves to fall on deaf ears. It leads to a shocking move, reflecting the high stakes involved with the coup. Smalls’ dialogue is refocused to getting them out of harms way. It leads into a few different avenues before settling in on an impossible feat. Knowing they have opposing forces en route, readers watch as Small’s unit makes a risky gamble. This leads to an emotional close. The writing has been quietly building this sequence up and teases the payoff as the finale looms. Solid read.

Kudrański leads off with a frank look at Abraham fending off threats. His expression never backs down as the odds go against him. This leads into some brutal action as Smalls continues to attend to more pressing matters. This is offset by Ana’s discovery. Looks of shock and awe take hold as she processes her latest discovery. Coloring in these panes pop to move her story into a more unsettling place.
Readers hone in on Smalls’ wild idea to buy some time. Reactions vary but show ultimate faith in the leader of the coup. This gets turned sidewise in the closing pages of the book. Smalls reaction to how the ship was turned on is heartbreaking. His face drops as he processes the news. A solid two page spread shows how his risky play appears to have paid off. This moment is brief as other emotion kick in. The final panel lets Smalls loose as the weight of fighting for freedom appears to have broken a man’s soul.
FINAL GRADE: 8.5
Smalls’ dangerous plans come to fruition btu not without a grave sacrifice. Guggenheim and Morello push the pace while challenging Smalls’ sanity. Kudrański’s art delivers a sensational look at the emotions involved. With the goal in sight, can Smalls keep it together long enough to secure freedom? One way to find out.
