LEVIATHAN FREEDOM #3 by Marc Guggenheim, Tom Morello, Szymon Kudrański& DC Hopkins (Comixology Originals)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Guggenheim and Morello lets the surround cast reflect the audience view for the opening stages. Gabriel’s reaction to Smalls early success is a testament to their commitment of freedom. This escalates rather quickly as Smalls confronts Captain Relyea. Readers watch as the Captain stares down his attacker. There is instant tension once Smalls walks into scene. The dialogue becomes heated as their chess match of stance takes place. It leads into a violent result that shakes up everything.

The rest of the resistance gets solid page time for this chapter as well. A great side plot is teased while another member makes their stance crystal clear. it helps push events to a very complex close. Smalls plans have been on a hot streak of winning. Once a detail goes wrong, the writing shows how fast control can slip. Smalls pause as he sees the picture forming can’t be denied. This provokes a strong response, leading into a shocking final page. Another stellar writing display.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Kudrański open with Gabriel’s view as the attack is commencing. Readers can easily see the fear and worry in his face as the battle rages on. A fantastic two page spread shows the rebellion unfolding. Once Smalls enters the frames, his expressions are all business. It is easily visible the weight of the mission at hand. This lends itself to a fateful encounter with Captain Relyea. Once the two characters have their meeting, the art shows how there’s no turning back now.

This is also noticeable in the coloring usage in the uprising. Abraham’s time gets a substantial boost in this sequence. As the fight turns back to Smalls, a bold mid shot throws everything off course. The emotions in this timeframe explode with doubts. Readers watch as the fallout displays a new look for Smalls. This only worsens as he deals with the direct ramifications of what he’s done. This all leads into a simple but powerful final full shot. The image indicates how fast events are slipping from victory. A great showcase of the high cost of freedom.

FINAL GRADE: 8.7

One bold move puts everything in danger as Smalls presses forward in the quest for freedom. Guggenheim and Morello raise the stakes with grave ramififcations. Kudrański’s art shines through a chaotic setting. No one ever said Freedom was without consequence.
