STORY OVERVIEW:
After Leif’s death at the hands of the Khan’s, Frey lets her rage take over and she starts to take out the Khan’s. She finds herself face to face with Tengri himself and the choice of fighting for her family or continuing her path to mortality. With the help of her father, she escapes the situation to go get help from her family that didn’t come to the fight. Khan’s children try and take out Frey, but she kills one before the daughter that betrayed her gives her the option of finishing the task or regaining power. The choice is fully Frey’s; however, she wants the support of her other siblings, but there is a trap awaiting them.
WRITING:
This penultimate issue is one hell of a ride and full of action and drama. Zack Kaplan ups the stakes going into the final issue of this chapter. The emotional journey of Frey and the tug of war going on internally with her is on full display. Frey is having a real Michael Corleone in The Godfather crisis of self, and Kaplan captures this perfectly. The setup for the finale will have every reader on the edge of their seat and unsure of what Frey’s decision will be. This creates a great deal of excitement and suspense that is sure to explode in the chapter’s finale. Don’t worry about the action as Kaplan gives the reader the quality and amount that we’ve become accustomed to in this series.
ARTWORK:
The illustrations in this issue bring the story to life with impressive skill and detail. Marco Itri and Elisabetta D’Amico showcase their talents by crafting emotionally impactful visuals. Careful composition in each panel invites readers to notice and appreciate the artistic nuances. The brutal and graphic nature of the art amplifies the drama and action. Meanwhile, Thiago Rocha's red color palette shows the reader that the rage Frey is in is all consuming. This really heightens the artwork and brings a lot to the emotional tone of the story.
