STORY OVERVIEW:

The Vikings get the information they need to make their move on the Khan’s. But this only creates a fight amongst the family, as some of the family members want to sit this battle out for different reasons. Well Erik wants to poison everyone and capture their immortal tree for his own, and Frey wants to set up a distraction and destroy the tree. This fight between Erik and Frey about reclaiming power or giving it up becomes heated and tense. It is ultimately up to Leif to make the deciding call, and he chooses Frey’s plan. As the assault comes to fruition though, Erik decides to call an audible which may cause the family greatly. Not to mention, are the Vikings walking into a trap to begin with?

WRITING:

This issue continues the streak of just outstanding issues in this series. Zack Kaplan captures the disfunction of the Viking family perfectly. The fighting amongst each other gives the family something greater to overcome. You would think fighting a family that is still immortal is a big enough task. It’s these layers of the story that really make this story and series stand out. Kaplan layers these different issues in such a way that they flow and never get convoluted.

The action scenes in this issue really stand out and up the stakes of the story. But the real stars are the dramatic scenes and how the relationships between the characters play out. Kaplan really captures a family that is troubled but, on some level, still loves and respects each other. The end of this issue is awesome and reveals a traitor well ending on a brutal finish that will take the reader by surprise.

ARTWORK:

The artwork featured in this issue effectively conveys the narrative. Fico Ossio and Elisabetta D’Amico demonstrate notable skill and attention to detail in their illustrations, successfully engaging the reader on an emotional level. Each panel is thoughtfully composed, encouraging attentive observation and appreciation for the intricacies present within the art. The artwork is brutal and graphic throughout which adds to the drama and action. Additionally, the use of earth tones by Thiago Rocha enhances the story, providing it with a distinguished quality among similar publications.
