JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERGALACTIC SPECIAL #1 by Nicole Maines, Jadzia Axelrod, Travis Moore, Tamra Bonvillain & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Axelrod and Maines open with a horrific view of Naltor. The writing teases the dire situation unfolding. This leads into a striking moment which snaps into something more. Once reality snaps back, Galaxy finds the culprit behind these thoughts. Readers watch as the Secret Six are handled fairly quickly. Dreamer and Galaxy’s chat covers many emotions while handling the ever looming cloud over Dreamer’s head. The dialogue is frank but exposes the harboring feelings inside the dangerous wild-card.

Once events jet to Sapphire’s mission, the story starts picking up steam. Dreamer’s surprise appearance makes some headlines as not everyone is welcoming. The writing tackles the friction with “Absolute Power” fallout. This leads into an uneasy partnership with the potential to explode at any minute. Readers watch as the initial round of combat connects to create a larger threat forthcoming. All the while, the team is processing how to deal with being on the defensive. Pacing moves along as the conflict becomes greater.

This gives way to allow a strong moment between Galaxy and Adam Strange. Their talk hits on many fronts. It results in unlocking the key to combat the overwhelming odds. The main event doesn’t disappoint. It gives Dreamer a reluctant redemption piece. As the smoke clears, there’s some unsettled business between two members. This leads into the steady finish with more waiting in the wings. A solid tale form start to finish.

MORE JUSTICE LEAGUE ACTION!

Moore and Bonvillain begin with the terror on Naltor. A solid full page sells the terrifying possibility of the Witch Queen. Readers watch as events move to the House of Secrets. The scenario locks in Dreamer’s reality of Galaxy fighting the Secret Six. This gives way for a more personal look at Galaxy and Dreamer addressing long standing issues. It is very clear Dreamer is still reeling over recent events. This pushes Galaxy into soaring away. Once in transition, Sapphire’s team begins their mission. Panels ease into the conflicting personalities while allowing a reluctant party to crash events.

The structure of panels in this sequence extend out the personal conflicts before the next round of action. Seeing Green Arrow and Dreamer make some type of common ground gels very well into everything. Another round of action comes to life in the pages. This remains the formula for a great stretch of the book. Only when Adam Strange talks with Galaxy does it feel like the routine is shaken up. There’s great emotion written on their faces as ghosts are exercised out. This leads into a great finish and solid parting pages. The banter with Galaxy and Dreamer hits on a high level. It delivers for a solid parting shot with much coming in the future.

FINAL GRADE: 8.2

A new space adventure leads the JLU into uncharted territory in this latest one-shot. Axelrod and Maines present an unstable line-up exorcising their pasts. Moore and Bonvillain deliver on a fair balance of action and drama for the art. The last panel will have fans talking this New Comic Book Day! Check it out!
