IRON MAN #9 by Joshua Williamson, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard &Joe Caramagna (MARVEL COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Williamson opens with a brilliant way to re-introduce the original Whiplash. The thowback look with his inner monologue welcomes new readers into his new era. Stark’s response is as sassy and arrogant as usual. It is answered with a violent statement moving events into a more complex area. Seeing how the rogue pair attempts teamwork puts together a combustible situation. The can be said about Citizen V and Stark. Their trapped discussion lets Stark open up about loss and redemption. A solid play to transition to a much graver problem.
Adam Ware’s new A.I.M. order continues its’ covert moves. With each panel, Ware’s shrewdness is standing out. His discussion with M.O.D.O.K. has no give as he lays out orders. The scene is far different with Rhodey talking with Tony’s students. Their talk opens more doors before trouble arrives. The writing builds up a solid stand-off while showcasing how unhinged one villain has become. It does this while crafting a huge reveal. Williamson throws everything off its’ axis with Tony trying to sort through the bombshell information dropped. Except fans to have a loud reaction to this closing sequence.

Carnero brings readers back with a throwback look to Whipash’s early history. Woodard’s coloring gives these pages a classic look while the images show what Tony has done (acc. to the villain). A strong two page spread shows the results of the initial onslaught. Tony’s broken face speaks volumes to the level of attack. A half panel showing the losses Tony has taken amplifies Whipash’s point of view, while boosting a defensive plan. It leads to a small smile from the pair as their work seems to be paying off.
Readers get an intriguing look at the new A.I.M. order with M.O.D.O.K . A comical half panel shows the mad genius trying to “escape”. It runs along with Rhodey and May talking business amongst the students. Both scenes work on the side plot before letting Whiplash take the lead. Panels move fast as the escape attempts begin. A solid half panel opens one door while tipping off the ending. This gives Whiplash a clear full shot of his unhinged attempt to hurt Stark. While doing such it forces another hand. The jaw-dropping final fullpage changes everything as Tony’s world takes a major hit. Brace for it.
FINAL GRADE: 9
Tony’s got a case of deja vu with Whiplashes running wild! Williamson stacks the deck, leading to a major closing reveal. Carnero and the team keep the emotions high with stellar artwork. You don’t want to miss this ending!
