GREEN LANTERN CORPS #20 by Morgan Hampton, Fernando Pasarin, Juan José Ryp, Oclair Albert, Arif Prianto, Romulo Fajardo Jr., Matt Herms & Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Hampton slows things down to build up a weaving conflict on the rise. Jo’s trek to Zillaboq starts with a normal attempt to blow off steam. The writing shows how much Jo needs her time away. It’s quickly upended by some longtime rivals of the Corps. Readers watch as their return comes with a new set of ground rules lost in the shuffle of past events. The tone is crystal clear of the new authority in space. With one player off the board, the story shifts gears to a more emotional point.
John and Katma’s trip to Detroit allows for a moment of reflection. Having Stewart visit his mother’s grave gives Stewart a calming point to his rollercoaster return for the past few events. The conversation with Katma is playful in nature and showcases genuine happiness. The seeds of Kama wanting more is a solid addition into affairs. It makes a greater impact later in the chapter. Hampton spreads the page time effortlessly with the other Lanterns. While delving into two new ventures, the story never leaves Jo’s starting point. Readers watch as a shocking attack spirals into more chaos with a common denominator behind it. It’s paired with an equally engaging mystery starring the “Allsight” himself. Guy Gardner’s time off comes with more strings attached as the final page opens a living Pandora’s Box of danger. Great build for what’s to come.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
The art opens with a half panel look at the living planet where Jo is residing. Panels keep an uneasy feel as Jo attempts to get her drinks. Readers watch as a half panel brings in her opposition. After their brief dialogue, Jo begins a fast round of action. Another notable half panel shows the result, providing a solid pivot point to Earth. John Stewart’s return home brings out an undeniable sight. His smile takes over scenes takes over panels with Katma. Even as they fly through the bright skies, there’s never a moment where there isn’t true enjoyment on having a bright future.
Sinestro and Kilowog have a solid sparring match under Cruz’s watch. Readers see a glimpse of a new power’s limits while Oa sits ringside. Sharpe’s lettering gets a chance to let loose in these panels. Guy Gardner’s injections to panels provides some comedic relief before events shift back to drama. As more lanterns are drawn into a space conflict, the mood instantly shifts to business. Both Simon Baz and John Stewart’s mannerisms hit the gas pedal into action. This raises the stakes with one conflict. The other with Gardner taking lead spirals into quirky paths. Panels offer a fast conflict before leaving with a shocking last full page. Excellent job all around.
FINAL POINT: 8.8
There’s no rest for the weary as the GLC find out the hard way there’s some new sheriffs in space. Hampton orchestrates the drama flawless with such an ensemble cast. The art delivers a solid combo of quick action and more defined emotions fueling it. There’s no better time like the present to jump onboard with the Corps!
