*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Going from Batman to Barry Allen, readers know this was going to be a more upbeat story. The bond between Jordan and Allen is legendary. Adams runs with this for a very fun story. Depowered Barry is a key witness in a mob murder. Crooked cops have the orders to take him out. It is at this moment the story teeters in the humor direction. Jordan and Allen’s dialogue reflects their bff status to the letter. It doesn’t take long for the talk to get a touch more serious concerning Jordan’s visions. This results in a unorthodox move.

Allen’s deductions lead to a wild case scenario. Unfortunately, the talk is interrupted by Allen’s case at hand. On the plus side, the action kicks into high gear. Bruto gives off WAY too many Joe Fixit vibes. This may cause some readers to do a double take on what universe we are in. Once they get past this aspect, the match-up provides some classic hero themes. There’s no way to escape the vintage vibes being on display here. The conclusion is short, sweet and effective. It’s a straight-forward tale that longtime fans will have an extra appreciation for. Newer ones will just have a goo smile on their face reading it.

Montos steps in for art duties on this buddy trip. The beginning sequence is a bit more serious as Allen assess the situation. Allen reading the room works well with the close-ups of reactions. This leads into Jordan crashing the party (literally). From here the story dives into their longtime friendship. It feels as each panel catches one of them smiling. Being a fan of this pairing, there’s something very special in watching these two work a mission. This does give way for a brief serious moment that helps bridge a gap.

The breakdown of Jordan’s case carries with it an honest sense of caring. Allen’s assessment gets a genuine shock out of Hal. It’s a great curve thrown into play before being interrupted. A half page panel rings the bell on some action. It can’t be understated how much Bruto looks like Fixit. The fight also draws out a few comical reactions as the pair gets in over their heads for a bit. How they get out is a crowd pleaser. A full page image brings out the best of both to complete the conflict for a win. It’s fallout ends with some great parting shots before moving onward.

FINAL GRADE: 8.5

Put Hal Jordan and Barry Allen in the same book and you get magic. It’s a winning formula. Adams’ writing carries a throwback feel with handling a modern crisis. Montos & Fajardo Jr.’s art showcases why this is a legendary pairing. Another fun one and done while on the search for answers. Keep an eye out for it!
