STORY OVERVIEW:

We open the issue in Graceville, Minnesota on a family farm, where we learn that the owners of the farm have taken in an orphan named May. We get the feeling that May could be dealing with some Kai-Sei powers, but the strength and nature of her powers is still a mystery. Meanwhile, the G-Force USA Team is basking in their successful elimination of Godzilla. Their success has earned them global admiration and respect. It has even brought Captain Riviera and Dr. Chiba closer together with a newfound respect for each other. However, Jacen is the one to watch as his take down of Godzilla has fused himself with the King of the Monsters. Which means when Jacen’s emotions get the best of him, a whole new threat is revealed.

WRITING:

This first issue of the new arc gets the reader up to speed, well teasing what we will find out in the issues to come. Tim Seeley does a great job of showing us where we are after the conclusion of the first arc. We get the answers to what the team has been up to and the rock stars they have become, well also building on the mystery of what’s next. The introduction of the young girl May, who is very shrouded in mystery, builds a level of suspense. She will for sure be the character to look out for going forward in this arc.

But the biggest suspense builder is this new dynamic with Jacen and the spirit of Godzilla for lack of better term. Is Jacen possessed by Godzilla, or is he able to project and become Godzilla, or is it something entirely different. Seeley does an awesome job of showing us the connection but not revealing what we are truly seeing. This builds up interest and suspense for the next issue and makes this series a must add to everyone’s Pull List.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this issue looks great and really brings the reader into this new world and era we find ourselves in. Hendry Prasetya hits the ground running with his first issue in this series on the artwork. Prasetya expertly builds on what Nikola Čižmešija started in this series with the art. No where is this more apparent than his art for the “ghost” Godzilla. It’s such a cool visual and really shows off Prasetya’s capabilities as an artist.

Speaking of the new Godzilla design, the colors really make it pop off the page. Francesco Segala & Gloria Martinelli really show off their skills with not just that piece of art, but with their color choices throughout the issue. The vibrant colors give the issue a clean and futuristic look, while really accentuating the artwork.

Final Thoughts:

Godzilla #7 kicks off the new arc of this series in a big way. Revealing the aftermath of the elimination of Godzilla well also introducing us to a mysterious new character, really sets the table for where we will go in this series. This issue is a little story heavy and light on the action, but this is a necessary evil as this issue is meant to set the tone of what’s to come. If you have not been reading this new Kai-Sei era of Godzilla, this is a perfect jumping on point to get into this series. Trust me, you will want to grab a copy and prepare to get lost in this world.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8/10
