*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story is very deceptive in delivery. Carl’s counting backwards form the “end of the world”. It sets a horror tone with a severed head falling at his feat. This spins into more flashbacks and he sits around his ex-girlfriend’s boxes. The writing establishes his way of coping with the break-up while preparing for the uncertain times ahead. Once flashes start appearing the mood changes quickly.

Readers see the shock of losing an entire city. This gets overshadowed quick by the Borant Corporation. Opening the door to the unknown unlocks many areas of Carl’s persona. From here, the narration explains what’s unfolding with some sass behind the words. It’s countered by Carl’s growing paranoia. Watchign the “reality show” take hold shakes up the time of learning. It puts Carl in an uncomfortable corner to escape from. Judging by the last page, that is the start of many more problems en route. Interesting to say the least.

MORE FROM VAULT!

Panel formatting is different in this chapter. Using a “frame model”, the art locks in on the quirkiness of events unlocking. There are some extreme points shown as well (ie: Mrs. Parsons). This also allows Carl to show some personality as he deals with his breakup and a stubborn cat. Both lead into walking outside and seeing his future open before him.

The pages show the game challenging him at every level. It gives readers an insight into the unstable reality he has just entered. His reactions don’t stray too far from being worried. As the events start taking shape, Carl prepares for the unknown. This comes into play with the final page. The full shot shows immediate threats on the horizon. What he does next is anyone’s guess.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

As a completely new reader to this world, Carl’s journey is one with much promise. Solid writing and art stage events rather easily as the mystery unfolds. It is easy to see where the growing buzz captured the audience from.
