STORY OVERVIEW:

Fresh from killing Harry, Doc Beacon emerges from the hole to confront Sam and Louis. The two remaining robbers are very nervous with the Doc, and for good reasons the Doc can finish them off whenever he chooses. The new attitude for the Doc brought on by the talisman he got off the body of Auberon is scary and certainly noticeable. After restraining from killing the others, Doc returns them to town and says he will give them their cut tomorrow. However, neither of the other men trust this and it makes them do stupid things.

WRITING:

This issue feels a little more sinister than the other issues in this series thus far. Rafael Scavone brings a bit of gallows humor to this issue, which makes for some uncomfortable humor which sets the macabre mood. The mystery of the talisman and its effects on Doc are still shrouded in mystery and only alluded to. This builds up an air of suspense and mystery that will surely continue into the upcoming issues. Overall, the story in this issue is a bridge between issues that serves its purpose of moving the story forward. Nothing overly shocking or exciting, but some good storytelling that sets up where we are going.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this issue captures the essence of the story perfectly. Eduardo Ferigato takes those uncomfortable gallows humor moments and portrays it in the art perfectly. The scenes play out how you would imagine well you are reading, which is a testament to Ferigato’s artwork. The color choices compliment the artwork and really set the mood. Speaking of setting the mood, Deyvison Manes letters further set the mood and tone. Allowing the reader to easily follow the story as well as showing the reader the feelings they should be having.

Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #3 is a good bridge to move the story forward. Despite the lack of anything major happening, the issue fills in the gaps of where we will be going in the series. The gallows humor in the book brings some uncomfortable, but entertaining moments to the story. This is what truly makes this issue a worthwhile read.
