STORY OVERVIEW:
After cutting Leopold’s head off, Harry threatens the Doc to which the Doc threatens to throw the head down a mineshaft. When Harry fires a shot, the Doc drops the head in fear. After Sam squashes the tension the men all head down into the shaft to retrieve the head. The whole way down the Doc fears Harry and his intentions. He has good reasons to be afraid as Harry’s greed and drunkenness is leading him to be irrational. However, little do the criminals know, but the Doc has found the magic talisman that belonged to Leopold. This will make everyone’s next move a little more interesting.
WRITING:
This issue really picks up the story and brings a whole new sense of urgency and suspense to the story. Rafael Scavone does a great job of building up the tension between the characters. The interactions between the men and what their intentions are really allow the reader to understand each one of the characters unique behaviors. At the same time the lack of complete trust in one another makes for some great suspenseful moments in this issue and sets up for future issues. The cliffhanger Scavone ends this issue with does an incredible job of making the reader yearn for next month’s issue already.
ARTWORK:
The artwork in this issue really encapsulates the themes of the story impeccably. Eduardo Ferigato does an amazing job of making the art feel claustrophobic. The setting of the old mine already gives off a certain amount of fear and claustrophobia, but Ferigato’s artwork really captures that essence and makes the story much more suspenseful. His color choices further the terror of the situation, as the darker earth tones give an air of despair to the already unsettling atmosphere. Deyvison Manes lettering also elevates the feelings, giving the characters their own tones and allowing the reader to know the feelings each character feels throughout the issue.
