DETECTIVE COMICS #1109 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janín and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Taylor teases more truths into Psion’s early connection to the trio. The writing shows the innocence of a novice hero rubbing off on the grizzled vets. It eludes to more dangers in the future. Once it returns to present, the mood becomes more frantic with the child getting to Dinah. The writing sets up the long game with Batman’s’ dive for more information.

After the quick action, the pace slows down to soak in some more revelations to the scheme at hand. It leads into a more shocking twist that Taylor keeps close to the vest. One character gets impulsive and makes a break on their own. The actions lead into a darker direction heading to close. A stronger build than might have been expected but nailed the landing.

Janín’s throwback pages unlock a few sides to the trio rarely seen. Watching Batman making a mistake leads to Psion’s deductions. His innocent look steals Batman’s embarrassment to lead into the present. Queen’s scared looks elevates the larger threat to Lance’s safety. The way the assassin’s demeanor switches begins a terrifying attack. Panels fill with great action esp. with a trick arrow involved.

Once events go to the outskirts of town, the pages get colder as the reveals start trickling in. Queen and Lance’s reaction to Batman disappearing is classic. It allows for one hero to take hold of the scenes. Readers see as the escape attempt goes awry with more curves thrown into play. Reactions cover many ground as they move the story to close. Once arriving on the last page, the air lets out of the room with the final scene. Janin hits the emotional punch before bowing out on a steady note. Solid work per usual.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The sins of the past strike deep in the present as more truths are revealed. Taylor stages events magnificently to hit high marks. Janín delves into the heartfelt pulls of a dark legacy with fantastic art. This series never misses on delivering powerful drama.
