DETECTIVE COMICS #1104 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janin, Wayne Faucher and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Taylor gives this issue a very finite feel. The opening sequence focuses on tracking down a lead in Crane’s disappearance. This is textbook Batman as he tracks down the party. The only difference is the virus is taking hold. Knowing time is sipping away, Batman makes a few parting plans in preparation. The writing sees hm call Catwoman for a final send-off. It is a drastic move to amplify the stakes. Bat’s dialogue with Superman is equally important. The “gift” he gives Clark is very shocking. Readers will have many thoughts surrounding this plot point. Throw in some family bonding with his son and Taylor covers the people Bats truly cares for. It helps transition to the major altercation here.

The mood becomes tense when Batman tracks down Crane. Tylor’s writing sets a few plans in motion. Most notably, The Lion’s scheming comes into focus. Readers watch as Batman has a counter ready. It plays out as one might expect. There’s plenty of heroic moments to escort the audience to the finale. Once here, there is some very interesting clues revealed. What started out as a mere villain trying to create havoc becomes more. The final page throws in more of a personal tie into an already heavily woven mystery. Great chapter.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!

Janin gets an assist from Faucher on ink duty for the first 16 pages. The opening page swings Batman into the mix in style. Panel staging runs the timeline back on Crane’s escape very well. The typical Batman scowl never escapes this confrontation. It only disappears when Batman lets Bruce Wayne out to say his final goodbyes. The Catwoman sequence is structured perfectly. Knowing their complicated history, this proves to be a brighter exchange than more recent encounters. Superman’s time is more questionable due to the virus’ effect. There is much uncertainty in Batman’s reasons. This fades when Damian Wayne arrives. It proves to be a heart-warming time before actions crank back up.

Readers watch as Batman crashes the scene in style. The car introduction only leads to a more wild scenario. A half page shot brings out Batman and his quarantined suit in all its glory. This kicks off a very well staged fight between Lion and Bats. Readers get an extra bonus on Batman’s backup. Another half page panel brings them in restarting the fast pacing. It leads into a dramatic escape. Readers can sense what’s going on. They just won’t see the final panel coming. The art teases the shocking reveal’s impact which sends everything on its axis. There’s many things to be pleased with concerning the art.

FINAL POINT: 9

Time slips further out of Batman’s grasp as he searches for a cure. Taylor’s writing covers a few different emotional stages before diving into action. Janin’s art showcases some different sides of Batman as he fights to deny the inevitable. Detective Comics remains a must have whenever it drops at the LCS.
