DAREDEVIL #8 by Stephanie Phillips, Lee Garbett, Frank Martin & Ariana Maher (MARVEL COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Phillips throws a unique concept at readers with Mister Fear’s new objective. The introduction shows the unstable mind absorbing the chaos surrounding him. His latest victim is a tortured soul forced to smile while Fear embellishes his win. Matt Murdock’s entry begins with reflection over Elektra’s recent emergence. The writing shows him reeling form the encounter while trying to regroup his personal life. This calm state only worsens when he discovers Fear’s latest kill and the message left for him.
Readers see how Fear twists the usual narrative on his approach. It leaves room for more explosive results while pushing Murdock into action. The move is a far cry from when we last saw the villain in Moon Knight a few months back. Phillips moves Daredevil back into familiar territory before wrapping up the issue with a great cliffhanger. Seeing Murdock in a disheveled state adds more unpredictability into motion. Very curious to see where this all leads now.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Garbett and Martin return after two issues off. A nine grid page looks at the world burning around Fear. A striking full page silhouette welcomes in the true terror to the book. The small panel of smiles provides a transition point to send events back to Matt Murdock on. His thoughts come to life as he processes what Elektra has done. The return of Fear serves to get his mind off events. This leads into a chilling re-introduction of old “friends”.
Readers watch as Fear torments Daredevil through video screens. Martin’s coloring steals moments as Fear lays down this plans. A fantastic two page spread lays out the details of the new scheme. The impact is great as DD responds. Panels reflect his building anger to events. One notable one is a thug’s proclamation to DD’s face. While brief, it reflects Fear’s ill intentions. This moves events to close with a great full page walk-off to hold readers over. Exceptional work.
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
Fear looks to impact the city in a profound measure as an old DD rogue returns! Phillips orchestrates a new look at terror with a sensational script. Garbett and Martin keep a high pace for the art as the drama flips to action fast. How do you take Fear from a Man without any? Only one way to find out!
