*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Pires doesn’t stray from the winning formula for this series. The opening sequence teases the despair after the L.A. siege. Tensions are high as the life of Los Angeles holds on by a thread. The writing never lets this escape readers’ minds, even while the over-the-top violence plays out. McKenna’s entrance kickstarts a direct attack which comes with grave consequences. Knowing this could be the last ride, a sense of dread lingers while the heroics shine.
Their attack is upended by Chromedome’s planning. This gives a small window to give the villain time for telling his origin story. Readers watch as his breakdown comes with some empathetic moments, but not enough to redeem. It sets the stage for the knock down, drag out brawl everyone is waiting for. The actual combat delivers on a high intensity. There are some wild moments mixed in before the thunderous conclusion. Once in the epilogue, the writing gives a bittersweet ending to one of the more imaginative takes at the LCS.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Gedeon and the team go for more compact looks but never short-change the action. The opening look post-siege conveys the uncertainty for the residents. Gears change fast as McKenna’s arrival is guns blazing. A solid half page brings her to the show, ready to fight. This is complimented by a great half panel of the Mutts in action. Readers watch as everything builds up to a solid level of tension before it all explodes.
The Mutts raid on Chromedome’s place is short but effective. It leaves time for a full page flashback of Chrome’s origin. Panels lock on the emotional pulls while losing the villain in his own plans. This allows for a stronger connection to the audience for the main event. Panels orchestrate the chaos with ease as the action takes hold. A bold full page look ends the fight with much devastation in its’ wake. The epilogue paints a happy future to grow from as a new day dawns. This leaves room for a solid final parting look on the closing panels. Vintage Mutts at their best.
FINAL GRADE: 9
MUTT UP OR SHUT UP!!! Pires drops a superb finish as the Mutts go for broke against Chromedome. Gedeon and the team bring the pain and drama with vibrant art. A fun, imaginiative journey each issue! Don’t miss this!
