C.O.R.T.(Children Of The Round Table) #6 by Tom Taylor, Daniele Di Nicuolo, Rain Beredo & Wes Abbott (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Taylor pulls out all the stops for this exciting chapter. The conversation between Fel and her dad conveys their disconnect. It opens up deeper emotions than just a supernatural fight. While this is commencing, the team tries to execute their rescue plan. The writing shows their awkwardness as they send one to maneuver through the historic building. Kevin easily becomes the breakout start for this issue. His comedic moments help bring the action to life.

Once that kicks off, the book finds its’ groove. There’s a series of pages that you can’t help but root for the kids to get past some guards. Readers watch as they show some heart as they begin their rescue properly. Connor’s demeanor can’t be ignored here. For being the stand-off from everyone, the writing shows him breaking just enough to show he cares. This carries into the final confrontation of the issue. There’s more emotion behind the action then expected which helps. It leaves with a defiant group finally embracing their destinies. The fallout adds many elements into play from worry to happiness. It compliments the final page which leaves readers with a much needed dose of hope.

Di Nicuolo & Beredo present the standoff between Fel and her dad with a solid amount of tension. Their expression clash just enough to push the other key players into place. Kevin’s advancement works to portray his nervousness. It also allows for the true hero in him to emerge. Beredo’s coloring makes the moments facing the guards that more impactful. It keys in on unlocking his staff’s abilities. The results are worth the effort.

A full page image brings the team in properly for action. Panels carry an energetic feel as the fight kicks in. A strong two page splash accelerates the key combat. This energy moves into Marnie’s rescue. Another great full page shows the team at the front gates. “What an entrance” indeed. The final fight moves very quickly. There’s a fair share of action shots to bring a conclusion to Fel’s chat. The fallout crafts a steady ending with more left on the table. A last full image says goodbye form the group but hopefully not for too long.

FINAL GRADE: 9.3

Camelot’s finest have their first real challenge with the stakes never this high. Taylor’s writing balances the heavy drama with a healthy dose of heart. Di Nicuolo & Beredo cash in on the big moments via their stunning art. This series has been such a deceptive surprise, with no limit to where it can go. Make a point to check it out.
