BATWOMAN #6 (DC COMICS)
One night can change everything.
Kate Kane knows this all too well. An ill-fated confrontation led Kate to fight her sister Beth. With the broken persona of Alice taking hold, the sisters had a tragic conclusion to their meeting.
This has led to Kate’s relocation to Pelaton, Greece for help. Many questions of how this all came to be have arise. Those answers are finally given.
BATWOMAN #6 by Greg Rucka, Jeffrey Spokes & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS) sees a hidden time of Kate’s past brought into the spotlight.
Let’s take a deeper dive into this chapter.
BATWOMAN #6 by Greg Rucka, Jeffrey Spokes & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Rucka opens with the night of the fall with no apologies given. It is a striking time as both Beth and Kate are forever changed. The writing shows Kate’s desperate attempt to save her sister. In its’ wake shows Kate’s failed attempt to cope with what’s happened. Readers can easily sense the sorrow in her voice as she talks with her dad. It is a very somber moment that mirrors Beth’s uncanny survival.
Watching Beth emerge from the water leads into a wild journey of her own. Using Kate’s image as a disguise, the banter with “friends” moves events to a calm state. This gets upended as Beth starts letting other influences take hold. Readers can sense a shift in thought before swinging the spotlight back to Kate. Her meeting with her cousin leads to an uncomfortable reality. This speeds events to close. Rucka sprinkles in more secrets pushing towards the closing pages. Once here, the saga in Greece has greatly needed clarity. This only makes the previous issues all more impactful to this new era of Batwoman.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Spokes jumps in for art duties and doesn’t waste time. The full image of the cliff fall sets a high pace early. A magnificent two-page spread displays Kate’s fleeting attempts to rescue Beth. Her screams of anger mesh with the imploding scenario. This only grows more personal as Kate crawls back home. The wear of events has taken its’ toll on the hero. Seeing her admit failure is a powerful moment.
Beth’s journey also leans in that direction once it starts. Her disillusioned glares steal scenes as she navigates her ruse. This becomes stronger after she’s settled back “home”. Readers see the struggle within shine with the use of mirrors. It’s a solid run of panels demonstrating the tough line Beth walks. Readers see more emotions open as Bruce Wayne sees his cousin. The family moment screams the burden Kate carries. This moves events fast to the closing portion. Once here, a great half panel dictates events as a decree is stated. It leads into a steady finish with looks on uncertainty filling the air. A fitting look back before jumping ahead.
FINAL GRADE: 9.2
