Queen In Black #3 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 3rd issue of Queen In Black from Marvel Comics!

The battle is on! Hela and Knull are on Earth, and the Marvel heroes are doing everything they can to get ahead of Hela. So just what does this mean for the Fantastic Five?! Let’s jump into it!

The Story

Al Ewing really takes you on a wild ride for the issue that raises the stakes while deepening the ongoing threat the heroes are currently facing. It’s kind of crazy to think this is going on at the same time that the Armageddon event is, but when it rains it pours.

One thing I really enjoy about this series is that it is not limited to New York City, Wakanda or some other well known location in the Marvel universe. This threat really is all encompassing in both it’s scope and scale, and it really helps it stand out apart from the Armageddon story. Yes, they both are two ongoing event stories but they’re so entirely different from one another that there really is something for every reader.

I also really enjoyed how it feels like every major character is getting brought into this story and that nobody is off the table. A few characters show up in the issue that I was not expecting at all and really added to the escalation of the story. When you get this many heroes involved it really raises the stakes and helps convey how crazy things are getting.

Al does some interesting character development on several characters that will be interesting to see how it plays out in the future and in other series. There’s also the ending and oh boy. Yeah, that isn’t going to be good for anyone. I won’t spoil what it is, but you’ll know what I mean when you see it. Talk about taking a swing for the fences with the story and where it’s going. Right know the metaphorical baseball is in the air, but where it lands is yet to be seen.

The Artwork

Iban Coello, Paco Medina & Guru-eFX are in charge of the artwork for the issue and they do a phenomenal job with it. There is A LOT going on in the issue and each panel is impeccably drawn and colored. You can tell how much time and effort went into each panel. The last page in particular stands out again as one of the best of the issue and one that is sure to have fans talking. I also really liked several character designs we get to see at the start of the issue. I really like how they took a potential “what would happen if…” and made it come true. It’s some of the craziest but also amazing designs I’ve ever seen.

Overall Grade: 8/10

Another explosive entry into the series that continues to raise the stakes and impress with it’s level of storytelling. Al Ewing’s story, together with the fantastic artwork make this an issue you don’t want to miss.
