*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

For my money, no one else brings out the true definition of this partnership better than Waid. The writing brings to life the initial shock of the leaked information. Considering where in the timeline this takes place, stakes are heavy. Watching Alfred fend for himself vs. Poison Ivy carries a dreadful sense of loss. Even with a heroic save, the pressure of Merger having this access is unavoidable. This isn’t just on Fusion. The entire Justice League is in worry. Their dialogue processes the tough news before leading the story into a deeper conversation.

Clark explaining to Lois on why he held back his secret is a very powerful moment. The writing lets Lois’ anger match up with Clark’s regret. Where it jumps out is Batman’s commentary in post. His proclamation of Clark not losing Lois cements their bond of friendship. It’s minor but steals spotlight from the mission at hand. Meanwhile, the pair of Luthor and Joker is going right according to plan. Their unstable union steals failure from Victory’s grasp. It plays into a final confrontation which is vintage hero vs. villain. The action leads into a strong finish and better epilogue. Readers leave this issue with a greater understanding of the heroes bond and deep rooted connection.

Don’t miss DC K.O.!

Gutiérrez and the art team welcome the end with Jim Gordon piecing Batman’s identity together. It is a small moment with huge weight behind it. This moves into a quick scrap between the amalgamed leads. Their brush-up is brief but hits the key points. Panels speed up to showcase saving Alfred from Poison Ivy. This helps transition to the JL Watchtower. The heroes rection to Merger’s moves makes for an uneasy panel. There is a glimmer of optimism before heading into deeper talks.

Readers watch as Lois and Clark have a much needed discussion of events. The art highlights Lois’ frustration ay the deception. Even with bittersweet moments in the mix, the mood of distrust lingers. It doesn’t take long for Merger’s plans to go into effect. The heroes struggles with the attack hit their mark before a true reveal. This pushes the pacing to the main event. A near full page entrance rings the bell for this fight. The moves displayed show how intense and personal this brawl is. It leads to a full page conclusion fitting for the time. In its’ wake, Gutiérrez displays a side of Batman rarely seen: a smile while recapping time spent with his best friend. It adds to a more calm final act with a perfect full page send off. Never a misstep here with the art.

FINAL GRADE: 9

A mash-up of epic proportions pushes the Worlds Finest to their limits in a excellent arc conclusion. Waid’s writing brings out the personal drama before swinging for the fences with the action. Gutiérrez & the art team gift readers with an amazing visual experience. This series continues to be a marque staple for any superhero fan on NCBD.
