Captain America #6 (Marvel)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 6th issue of Captain America from Marvel Comics!

Things in the Marvel comics universe are certainly in a bit of uncertainty right now, to say the least! Every nation on Earth is reeling from the death of Doctor Doom, and trying to navigate the power vacuum that’s erupted from his death. So just how does Captain America feel about it? Let’s jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics // Captain America #6 by Chip Zdarsky (Writer), Delio Diaz & Frank Alpizar (Artists), Romulo Fajardo Jr (Color Artist), VC’s Joe Caramanga (Letterer), Valerio Schiti & Frank Martin (Cover) is a great issue packed with political intrigue that is sure to thrill fans.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

Chip Zdarsky really hit a home run out of the park with this issue, no doubt about it. There is a lot of behind the scenes political maneuvering that is extremely reminiscent of the MCU film The Winter Solider and I loved every panel of this from start to finish.

This issue is the first part of the Dooms Shadow storyline, and the world is still dealing with the fallout of the death of Doctor Doom and everything that is happening as a result. I really enjoyed seeing how this gets set up and going because there are a LOT of moving parts with this story. At the center of these pieces is none other than Steve Rogers aka Captain America.

Steve’s part in this is going to be very interesting to see play out, because in multi-national stories he’s almost always at the center of them in the Marvel universe. Steve is pulled into the middle of things by a very familiar face that is making a somewhat quiet return with a familiar organization. What this means for the future is going to be interesting to see play out, but I have no doubt this is the start of something much larger.

It all leads to an explosive confrontation that is sure to put Steve at odds with a couple of governments. It’s already shaping up to be extremely interesting and the ramifications are sure to be HUGE.

The Artwork

Delio Diaz, Frank Alpizar & Romulo Fajardo Jr all do a fantastic job with the art in this issue. I loved the hyper-realism you see with the characters in the panels, because it helps add to the realism with the story. This isn’t a simple good guy vs bad guy story you might be used to in other comics. As such the artwork isn’t like other art and it really stands out among the other issues out this week.

FINAL POINT: As far as starts go, this one is off to a roaring start. This is already shaping up to be a storyline you’re not going to want to miss out on, because it’s already one of the best this year. Together with stunning artwork, I can’t emphasize enough that you should put this series on your read list ASAP.

Overall Grade: 9/10
