ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN #17 by Al Ewing, Sid Kotian, Prasad Rao &Lucas Gattoni (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Ewing delves into the back stories of Sinestro and Jessica Cruz to open the issue up with. Each tell a tale of tragedy as they progress each characters current place. This does more to help strengthen Sinestro’s attacks more than anything. Once here, the writing unleashes his brutallity with no remorse. This does lead to some extreme scenes.
Seeing Guy Gardner getting his arm cut off is prime example. It becomes the tip of a very violent iceberg. Readers watch as this brutality sparks John Stewart into action. Their encounter is pouring with some emotion to spark the readers. This finally brings in Jo to the battle at a puzzling point. Considering how last issue ended, it attempts to make up for lost time. This leads into the valiant response from the heroes. Immediate fallout caps off the adventure but not without some dangling plot threads. The largest easily being the last page. How that moves onward is very unclear.

Kotian & Rao put events into motion rather quickly with the backstories of Cruz and Sinestro. Both have their fair share of terrified reactions. Each rotate use of a nine panel grid. Making these smaller allows for instant reactions. Watching Sinestro slip further into madness is a larger win on this comparison. His maniacal look provides a bleak path to the present.
Once here, the action takes a more deadlier turn. Showing how Gardner struggles to contain a Blackhand leads to losing his arm in a visceral way. This begins a domino effect of the viciousness Sinestro inflects. Stewart’s attempt to stop him is met head-on. A trippy full page shows the mind battle taking place. This moves into more steady action with Jo finally joining in. The fight ends with some bold images as drastic measures are taken. Readers see the fallout take a grand approach elevating the win. This also leads into a puzzling final full last page. Solid work on display withing these panels.
FINAL POINT: 8.2
Sinestro’s attacks collide with Jo’s forces in a loud fashion for this chapter. Ewing jumps around with key moments before re-aligning to finish on a highspot. The art team delves into the key points to add more gravity to the conflict at large. A payoff in certain aspects while teasing more to come.
