ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN #16 by Al Ewing, Sid Kotian, Prasad Rao & Lucas Gattoni (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Ewing presents a much stronger chapter involving the whole cast. The opening saga with Simon and Cameron carries a heavy espionage feel to it. Even with Johnny Double getting the message from beyond, it settles into a more grounded scenario fast. The intensity of Bas’s words never escape readers’ attention. They are fueled by powerful rage. It leads into a more complicated finish with Cameron becoming involved. This allows the issue to head back into space with more confusion taking place.
Jo’s conversation with Tomar take a few heavy turns. Th writing never shies away from Mogo’s impact. Even when it arrives looking for destruction, an unlikely hero steps up to stop it. This leads into a more chaotic moment when someone is mortally wounded. Readers watch as the events set off a series of plot dominos to get to the closing act. Once here, Jo’s plan of attack comes with a valiant speech lead-in. Its’ fallout raises a few more questions as a solid wrench is thrown into the high rolling wheels of this issue.

Kotian & Rao start with the covert actions of Simon and Cameron. Panels are filled with heavy drama as Agent Double is confronted. The anger is screaming from Bas’s eyes as he takes action. It is interrupted by a desperate response from Found. Readers don’t have time to catch breath as Cameron jumps into the fray. Her reactions are laser-focused on completing the mission at hand. A shocking full page indicates who won this fight before jetting events into the cosmos.
The space pages begin with a stern conversation with Jo and Tomar. There is a true uneasiness to their talk. This gets eclipsed by a strong two page spread of Mogo’s arrival. Tensions run high as Gattoni’s lettering steals these panels with Mogo’s decree. The art shifts back to simpler times on Earth before returning to space with a vengeance. Mogo’s initial strike is thwarted in a grand way. Rao’s coloring amplifies these moments until actions start cracking the foundation. It allows an evil presence t make a full page entrance. From here, the epilogue focuses in on Jo’s battle cry and one who hears it. The final page teases more danger before heading out on a steady note. Solid work.
FINAL POINT: 8.6
Jo’s attempts to stop Mogo hit a major roadblock as tensions run high on Earth and the great beyond. Ewing gives the supporting cast ample time to flex their muscles. The art team raises the gravity of the conflicts with each panel. Another weaving tale of hope standing its ground to the darkness.
