Ewing begins with Hammond having a “chat” with Oa. Tampering in what he’s done with Obsidian has drawn an audience. Before the main story begins, Ewing takes readers back to a more somber moment between Hal and Jo. Their dialogue displays Jo’s frustrations with Hal. It is countered with his charm and obviousness. This helps to tease the current drama at hand. Obsidian’s attack leads to a tense escape with little paths to pivot to.
Readers watch as Jo and company plan for a counter move. Their only saving grace has been disrupting the mind link Hammond has with his pawn. At this stage, the super-powered theatrics kick into high gear. Jo’s attack is standard in execution. Ewing throws in a much larger moment in handling the obstacle in their path. A new element has been added into this version of Lantern lore. The result is a solid finish to their fight. What transpires next is a much larger problem at hand. The final pages tease an impossible task. An offer is made and Jo might not be able to say no to. A solid journey form start to finish.

The art team gives Hammond’s twisted vision a distinct feel on each page. The two page spread shows the beast on the hunt. It easily creates a mood of panic while Jo and company flee for safety. The spotlight shifts to a previous time with Hal and Jo at a funeral. Their talk showcases many emotions. Readers can sense their strong friendship through the conflicting feelings. This snaps back to the present where a clue to stopping Obsidian is revealed. Its enough to give a sliver of hope. In this case, it’s all that is needed.
A full page image of Obsidian charging at the group kicks off the midway point of the chapter. Readers watch as a fantastic two page spread unleashes Jo’s powers. This leads into a brutal counter attack. Knowing what she’s been put through the past few issues, it is completely justified in the reaction. A wild card emerges through this frantic scene. Readers see what they wind up unleashing into the conflict. It results in a spectacular full page finish. The fallout carries a heavy weight with it. Another two page spread welcomes an invested party into play. A final full page image brings in a familiar face with a proposal of epic proportions. There’s no turning back now.

Ewing’s writing features a highly emotional tale behind the strikes. The art team hits their marks with great action. The Emerald Excitement is on full display within this issue!
