ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN #11 by Al Ewing, Jahnoy Lindsay, & Lucas Gattoni (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ewing hits this issue on three fronts. The first dives into the fiery return of Tomar-Re. The entrance establishes his anger at the voice of OA. Their dialogue shows neither backs down from stances. It is a contrast to the mystery of Hal Jordan on Earth. Mullein’s team is prying for information of the destined Black Hand. The writing dabbles into the eclectic mix of personalities. It results in a clear cut plan of attack. You know what they say about the best laid plans….

Once Hector Hammond’s page time launches, the issue takes a more grounded stance. Watching him unleash his latest weapon unlocks a brutal encounter. Hammond’s dialogue is as slick as ever. The back and forth with Ferris overshadows the other plot points. It carries a classic supervillain take before injecting itself into Mullein’s plans. Once here, the story starts peeling a few layers back. Readers watch as the foreshadowing walks into the conflict with a stronger finish than expected. The closing pages brings events back full circle. It leaves the chapter with a few questions up in the air. Overall, a steady trek for the audience to follow.

Lindsay slow burns Tomar-Re’s entrance in opening the chapter. The rage of the red being is undeniable. Readers watch as the story transitions onto more standard vision of events surrounding Jordan and Mullein. The multiple personalities fill up the various panel structures. Expressions balance out some humorous moments while the heavier drama moves. It’s more balanced attac stretches into the Hammond portion in spades.

The nightmarish debut of Obsidian feels straight out of a horror film. A half page panel ushers in the new threat surrounded by violence. What results is a more dastardly look form Hammond. The panels mirror his enjoyment in others suffering. Ferris’ reactions counter to make these moments stand out. As the story swings back to Mullein, another character has jump-out portions. Kari Limbo’s unlocking of a GL ring is presented with a fantastic full page image. This is upended by Obsidian crashing the party. Coloring ushers in the confrontation on a huge note. Action shots move swiftly into the more calm finish. A few familiar faces welcome in a hostile party to a flooded cast. The full page image makes a loud statement before ending events this round. Solid work.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

Can Mullein stop a new threat before its too late? Ewing’s writing throws a few different looks into that dynamic. Lindsay connected with fantastic art to juggle the very large cast. There’s many moving parts for readers to gravitate onto with this new vision of Emerald Excitement.
