ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN #10by Al Ewing, Sid Kotian, Prasad Rao & Lucas Gattoni (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Ewing throws a few different hooks with this latest chapter. Opening with Hammond experimenting on a familiar face leads to more sinister means. The obsession into unlocking Jordan’s secret is bending any moral code. The same can be said with his mission for Goldface. Wounding Mullein allows the assassin to embellish in victory This allows for a drastic, but needed response to the situation. The writing shows Mullein in a dire state. Extreme measures are taken. The payoff delivers on a very vicious message.
Readers watch as the Lantern goes for broke to obtain victory. The brief dream sequence adds more confliction into the moment. It doesn’t take anything away from what’s needed. Readers watch as Mullein ends the conflict with deadly intent. The fallout steers into a more complicated affair with more parties involved. Timing concedes to unlock more of this mystery. It results with a clear direction to who is responsible. The final act ties back to Hammond’s meddling. This leaves readers with a final page shrouded in questions of what happened. One of the stronger issues of this series thus far.
Kotian and Pressy begin with a haunting look at Hammond’s experiment. Seeing the subject staring up form their containment unit adds to the horror element. Once readers see the truth behind the moment, it sends a shiver down spines. This moves events to Goldface’s attack on Mullein. The menacing approach of the assassin is interrupted by a near full page blow. The distraction leads into a very wild escape to try recovering for the hero. These panels aren’t for the squeamish. Desperate times call for extreme measures.
Mullein’s bullet removal is as intense as advertised. The flashback memories only add to the pain flowing in these panels. It results in a heroic recovery via near full page. A definitive statement is made in defeating Goldface with the panels. Once again, it’s not one for the weak stomached. From here, the art slows the pave down to a more casual approach. With the other characters now involved with Mullein, their conversation spins into something more. The near full page reveal from Goldface’s mind sends a loud message. This kickstarts the final pages. Once here, Hammond’s plans are on full display. There will be much reaction to the closing full page. Curious to see where this all leads from here.
FINAL POINT: 8.4
In Dying Day, in fading light….no Gold assassin will defeat a Lantern without a fight! Ewing goes to extremes for resolving an assassination attempt with the writing. Kotian and Pressy bring the pain with the bold panels depicting this fight. A grittier tale than expected that should win over readers with its impressive set-up.
