SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY (2026) REVIEW : A BOLD RETURN TO BASICS
After a long hiatus, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is BACK!
It has been since December 2021 that fans have seen Peter Parker make an ultimate sacrifice in “No Way Home”. Having his identity wiped from existence (via Dr. Strange) set up Parker to walk a lonely road into an unknown future.
Since that film, there have been 10 MCU movies to hit theaters. None had Spidey featured in them.
Fans breathed a sigh of relief as “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” was announced in March of 2025.
The main cast returned with Tom Holland reprising the title role of Spider-Man/Peter Parker. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon were back as MJ and Ned Leeds. New faces were introduced with Sadie Sink playing a mysterious role, along with cameos from MCU favorites. Factor in a new director for Ol’ Webhead in Destin Daniel Cretton & expectations were at an all time high.
Borrowing the name of the comic storyline following “One More Day”, many speculated on where the future of Spider-Man movies would now be heading.
With the film debuting at the box office on July 30th, the answer is very clear: nowhere but up!

*** SPOILER TALK - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED ***
Coming off the heels of a hard rebirth in plot, it is tricky to guess how this would mesh with the current MCU landscape set up. Cretton and the writing team makes a point to bring Spidey back to his basics for this movie. There is no major disaster going on. It is literally back to what makes Spider-Man great. Parker is flawed as ever with guilt being his true best friend. Holland taps into this theme often for great success. Knowing he did the right thing doesn’t ease the pain of life alone. Even with super-powers, the emotional tolls pay huge dividends when given time to flex the acting skills.
This comes into greater focus once he runs into his two best friends. The dialogue at their initial meeting is classic in delivery. Parker’s awkwardness shines when talking with MJ. Trying to hide his true feelings behind the lies he’s spewing is a fun laugh in the heavier long game. It doesn’t take long for the weight of his sacrifice to start crashing his foundations. Anytime with MJ brings out the pain no matter how he tries to spin a web to escape. There are a few gut-punches thrown in as both actors maximize the impact of their time together. Luckily, he’s made some other friends along the way to help.
THE WORLD FORGOT ABOUT PETER PARKER, BUT THE MCU DIDN’T FORGET SPIDEY!
One of the show stealers of this film is Jon Bernthal’s Punisher/Frank Castle. If you know their history form the comics (Castle debuted in ASM #129), this is a great example of their “friendship”. The comedic timing on display with the clashing personalities is priceless. This is a great showing of a new side of Castle to the MCU audience. Where he’s been a “frienemy” to Matt Murdock, Bernthal switches gears to show the gruff bond between his Castle and Holland’s Parker. Their journey goes on a few different voyages throughout the film. None greater than the final act. It proves how many layers Frank Castle has behind his bullets.
Castle wasn’t the only MCU favorite to crash the scene. Mark Ruffalo showcased the more calm Bruce Banner/(but still Angry Hulk) in a very different light. Ruffalo’s mentoring of Parker proves insightful as a driver for one side plot taking place. His role comes into greater importance later in the film. There is a nod to a comics moment between Hulk and Spidey that is a key point before the chaos ensues to close. Another character to steal some spotlight is “New Avenger” Florence Pugh aka Yelena/Black Widow. Her addition mixes up the dynamic just enough to elevate the main plot and “villain” of the movie.
Even though she hasn’t been in the MCU, Liza Colón-Zayas playing Detective Jean DeWolff provides a strong confidant as Peter continues his crime-fighting ways. Their work is excellent playing off each other. Pending how close they follow DeWolff’s history in the comics, their partnership in the future will be tested in a dangerous manner.
SHE PLAYED WHO?!?!?! HUGE SPOILER SECTION
The internet’s big secret is finally revealed in a very “Uncanny” way. Sadie Sink IS playing Jean Grey. Sink does a phenomenal performance as a tragic character with noble intentions. Grey comes across as one might expect being young in her powers. The usage is clever in delivery and provides much angst before the movie does a major reveal. From here, Sink detours directions to give a sympathetic look inside a broken soul. Making her portrayal this complex will have the audience swaying on why she does what she does. Rest assured, there will be no doubt on where Grey’s future is heading after.
END OF HUGE SPOILER SECTION, but
The movie also pays homage to many key covers and moments in the illustrious history of Spidey. Cinematography flourishes in bringing these classic moments to life. It’s a literal visual treat to watch what unfolds. Another HUGE component of the film is the stunt choreography. Each time there is a villain battle, fans will be blown away by what is unfolding. One sequence in particular takes the gold medal in this case. A showdown with the Hand is gonna blow people away in presentation. Combined with the solid writing on display, fans will be clamoring for more when the credits roll.
One bonus scene at the very end of credits will have pop culture fans guessing. Comic fans will be speculating with more concrete answers as the new era begins.

Welcome back Peter Parker! With a reset on his past, Peter Parker embarks on discovering himself while adapting to his growing heroic status in the MCU. Being brought back to basics with the gift and curse of powers, Tom Holland delivers a powerful performance from a spectacular script. The energy is matched by Zendaya and Batalon as the trio enters a new day with uncertainty surrounding them. Jon Bernthal steals the spotlight amongst great MCU cameos. Sink blazes into her new role with a fire unmatched. Leave no doubt: THIS is the vision fans will think of when they hear “SPIDER-MAN!”
