UNCANNY X-MEN #29 by Gail Simone, Luciano Vecchio, Matt Wilson & Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Simone presents a wild finish to this very intriguing tale. WatchingGraymalkin Prison crash and burn steers events to an unsung hero. Monet St. Croix is a very confident soul. Her words to “The Warden” shows no fear with impending doom. Even as the deck keeps getting stacked against her, the writing shows her defiance to back down. The moment allows for he to connect with Rogue’s team, but hands are very full. The fight with the New Mutants is getting more out of control by them minute.
Events race to a fever pitch between both team fights. The Outliers quickly wraps due to Mutina’s epic one line. This steers events back to M’s face-off. Her dialogue is sharp and unapologetic. It matches Rogue’s tough choice. This is eased with an assist from Gambit. From here, readers get the massive pay-off they have been waiting for. Inmate-X’s games start falling apart. Ellis comes into direct contact with someone looking to settle a score. The result is a thunderous exclamation point on her reign. The fallout from the victory spreads through the group. This leads to a surprising final panel. Where that will lead is anyone’s guess.
read last issue’s review!
Vecchio and Wilson go for huge moments right from the start. Monet’s standoff with Inmate-X carries a horror feel as his words intend to scare. Monet’s reaction says it all as she prepares to fight. A full page image shows her opposition come into focus. What’s more telling is her expression to this moment. From here, the story starts jumping around with great panels. They are all upstaged by one though.
There is a full shot of Mutina that might be a “Page of the Year” candidate as she says what many of us think “F*CK A.I.”. If this isn’t gif’ed or on some promo art, someone missed a perfect opportunity. The action starts picking up pace. Vecchio and Wilson do an excellent job about balancing all the moving parts. Readers get a great shot at Inmate-X’s last surge His face in the background of panels makes for an eerie feel. Once events jump back to Ellis, her conflict ends with a bold half panel. This ushers in the grand finale to all the fighting. Another mid shot shows how Inmate-X is stopped and not for the squeamish. The closing pages tie up everything while leaving some questions in the air. Incredible visual presentation.
FINAL GRADE: 9.5
The end of Graymalkin prison signals a last stand for the ages in this incredible arc finale. Simone keeps raising the bar on the intense drama and payoffs. Vecchio and Wilson don’t miss on delivering a non-stop thrill ride. This run never misses on delivering the best X-Men storytelling possible!
