STORY OVERVIEW:

Gord confirms to Harvey that he is an Alien and that’s why he’s part of the ragtag Area 51 Crew. But they don’t have time to truly unpack this revelation as they must get to a small town outside of Portland to investigate missing children and a UFO. The town seems to be coping with the missing children in a very strange way, which makes it harder for Gord and Harvey to really nail down what’s happening. During the trip Gord tells Harvey the story of how he came to Earth and the reason he’s still here. However, Gord could never guess his origin story would tie into what’s actually going on in this small town.

WRITING:

This second issue continues the fun from the first issue, while also taking a little more of a dramatic turn as well. Curt Pires injects a lot of humor into the plot of the story, well at the same time bringing in some more dramatic scenes as well. Pires navigates the line between overly serious and humorful masterfully. Gord’s back story really brings the reader in, well also serving as a greater plot device upon the reveal of what is actually happening in the town. This decision really shows the pure genius of Pires writing in this issue.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this issue is crazy and depicts a wild and crazy world perfectly. Jok uses this trippy art style to bring the reader into this world and by doing this matches the story perfectly. The creative character designs, coupled with the unique backgrounds, draw your eyes to each panel and are very pleasing. Jok adds a great deal to the story with his artwork and nails all the feels along the way. The color choices also make the artwork pop and couldn’t match the art better. This issue is as visually stunning as it is very cleverly written.

Final Thoughts:

51 #2 continues the fun of issue one well adding more sustenance within the actual story. The more dramatic story helps the reader feel more for our characters, well the amount of humor reminds us that this is still a really fun story and concept at the end of the day. The artwork matches the vibes of the story nearly perfectly. Two issues in and this series has already got me hooked. If you are looking for a fun and unique book, grab a copy at the shop this week, and enjoy.

FINAL GRADE: 8.9/10
