ULTIMATE X-MEN #24 by Peach Momoko, Zack Davisson & Travis Lanham (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Momoko opens with a nightmare look for MEI IGARASHI (MAYSTORM). Readers watch as Hisako’s disappearance weighs heavy on her soul. It allows for her to find a direction while another issue looms overhead. Stardust is a new and dangerous drug sweeping the mutant world. It teases power and responsibilities with Yoru hiding its’ truth. With young mutants dealing with a world hating them more and more, weakness to this new problem grows. This comes into Mei’s path in an unlikely way.

Teaming with Nico, the pair sees an unforeseen reaction with the pill near Armor’s essence. This leads to a confrontation between all parties. The mood is tense as Mei is pressing for answers. It leads into an unlikely party crasher. Readers watch as there is many emotions running through the panels. It frees up a few different notions to take the next steps in finding armor. Momoko nails the key pieces to this puzzle. The writing wraps this up long enough to give one last time to see this group as they are. A bittersweet farewell to a unique vision.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

The art is exceptional as always. It may seem like a repeat review but honestly, Momoko’s art is on another level. The nightmare sequence of Stardust in action and Mei’s dream ushers in a horror feel. This moves events into Yoru’s beginning. Her introduction dazzles as a half panel crafts a star with a darkside. Panels never seem to leave this feel as Niko and Mei get on their search.

Their psychic attempts win over readers as they strive for any signs of life. It leads to their meeting with Yoru. Images are brighter in coloring to tease the true nature of Stardust. Mixing up tones allows for another guest to make their way into view. Readers watch the emotions pour as dialogue teases hope. This leads to a calm ending run. The endgame nod works to say goodbye with a perfect full page closing up shop.

FINAL GRADE: 9

With Endgame looming in the winds, the Ultimate Children of The Atom say farewell in an emotional finale. Peach Momoko has made this series an amazing look at the gifted individuals. The series has grown into an evolution of Xavier’s dream all its’ own via superb art and writing. A shame to say goodbye but hopefully not forever.
