ULTIMATE X-MEN #23 by Peach Momoko, Zack Davisson & Travis Lanham (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Momoko’s storytelling in this series is second to none. It is a dark and grim view that is very complex in nature. Making Amano the focal point proves to orchestrate a greater series of events. knowing the character is anything but a saint, his involvement is one of mystery. The result is a chronological walk through the formation of this unit. Readers better buckle in as there is much to process here.

The art style is amazing. It’s haunting aura fits perfectly as Amano moves through the months. Amano’s opening sequence is horrific as the journey. This spins into tapping into key moments for the past 2 years. Readers watch as the influence lurks to maneuver in the shadows. The results shaped the road these young heroes moved through to dealing with Shadow King. Kanon and Nastu are both greatly impacted by his actions. None greater than Mei. The writing hits the huge points to push her into becoming the hero she is. Readers can appreciate the attention to details involving masks.

It is capped off with a stunning full page image. Amaro’s true form takes hold. It is very clear who he relates to in the MCU. The chilling dialogue alludes to much more. This is capped off with a more grounded approach to the current state of the Ultimate Universe. Heading into Endgame, all bets are off to what the future holds.

FINAL GRADE: 9

What Peach Momoko and the team have done with this series is extraordinary storytelling. Writing shows the influence of power through building drama. The art is simply amazing. Readers can’t ask for a better visual experience. The only downside is there is one one issue left…. Make sure to keep an eye out for this on NCBD!
