ULTIMATE WOLVERINE #16 (MARVEL COMICS)

The end has arrived for Logan in the Ultimate Universe!

When he discovers mutants are missing, there’s only one person who could be behind it: Magik! Their last encounter resulted in the death of her brother Colossus. His win was due to a weakened Jean Grey tapping into her powers. What’s going to happen now that she’s healed up and ready to fight?

ULTIMATE WOLVERINE #16 by Chris Condon, Alessandro Cappuccio, Bryan Valenza & Cory Petit concludes Logan’s last fight before Endgame.

Let’s take a closer look at how the finale ranks.

ULTIMATE WOLVERINE #16 by Chris Condon, Alessandro Cappuccio, Bryan Valenza & Cory Petit(Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Condon concludes events on a brutal yet fitting note. The opening focuses on Magik’s twisted versions of events. Seeing her grip of reality slip away attempts to give her some sympathy for what’s coming. This falls on deaf ears as Logan does some extreme measures to open to the door to Limbo. Both he and Jean know there is little time left to save everyone. Once they corss the line, there is no turning back.

As they travel through Magik’s lair, the mood never escapes the mission at hand. Once the victims are found, Logan makes some tough calls. His conversation with Jean proves their bond is solid as they embark to stop Limbo’s ruler. The writing dips Logan into a new territory. Readers see him stumble through a new world and questionable favor. This event is amplified by Jean’s reaction. It leads to a brief finish. The aftermath closes events up rather quickly. It closes the door with a rare happy moment before heading into Endgame. It felt telegraphed in delivery.

The art team gifts life to Magik’s backstory with the opening pages. It creates a sense of impending doom. Her close-up with a single tear cements that feel. Logan’s preparation to head to Limbo is met with the same aura of finality. It starts the final push on a very safe note. Other than a few sly grins, it is as business as it gets. Once they arrive, their expressions indicate the shock of their discoveries.

Readers watch as Logan walks through the dreamscape to find his target. In this mix, the panels really move very steadily. Nothing feels over the top in any sense. Jean’s full powers activated lead to a more standout moment. Logan’s final strike gets a great full shot. This moves into a speedy close. The final panel gives a moment for the pair to enjoy knowing what’s on the horizon. Very straight-forward to tie up loose ends

FINAL GRADE: 7.8

Logan’s final confrontation with Magik is just a formality in this very safe finale. Condon ties up loose ends in a rather fast fashion with the script. The art team hit their key points while closing this chapter. One door has closed as the final endgame has arrived.
