The Story
Deniz Camp might just be the best author at Marvel Comics right now, and I don’t think it’s close. Between his work on The Ultimates plus the work he’s doing with this series, he is on a run the likes of which we have not seen in a long time.
The story picks up in the midst of the battle between our heroes and the Maker’s forces and it’s a pretty evenly matched fight. While the fight is going on, we do get an update as to what’s going on with the other battle’s across the world. All the while you have Vision explaining things to Peter Parker’s family who are in hiding.
I really liked the way Deniz Camp raised the stakes in this issue to a level we haven’t seen before in this universe. World/Universe ending events are very common these days in comics, but this one truly feels like the entire universe is at stake and every decision matters. I also like how much Deniz Camp is keeping the reader on their toes with each issue. There are a few surprise twists in this issue that I did NOT see coming and is sure to have folks talking about the issue.
I won’t spoil what they are, but I will say that one didn’t catch me by surprise. If you’ve been keeping up with the news surrounding this incarnation of the Ultimate universe, than one of those surprises won’t totally surprise you. It’s still a gut wrenching one that is very poignant and one of the highlights of Deniz Camp’s entire run with this universe. Then there’s another surprise that I did not see coming, and left me completely shocked and surprised. It’s a bold take, but one that I really REALLY like! Will it be the only time we see it? Or could it come back at some point? Only time will tell.
The Artwork
The entire creative team did a fantastic job with the art in this issue and it really does an incredible job elevating the artwork to match the incredible story. There is a lot going on with this issue and the art never feels overwhelming or like it’s throwing a lot at you in the panels. Each panel is laid out in such a way that feels natural and perfectly planned. The level of the artwork continues to improve with each issue and is exceeding some of the best comics on the shelves right now.
FINAL POINT: Deniz Camp’s masterful storytelling is some of the best you’ll read. This issue is not only one of the best comics he’s ever written, but it’s one of the best comics I’ve read in the last 10 years easily. Together with artwork that continues to impress, this is a series that you need to add to your collection.
