ULTIMATE BLACK PANTHER #24 by Bryan Hill, Stefano Caselli, David Curiel & Cory Petit (Marvel Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Hill leaves this series with all loose ends tied up and a dangerous stat quo in place. The writing shows T’Challa’s defiance in the face of the Progenitors unwavering motives. There is no give in T’Challa’s voice. Even with odds stacked against, readers don’t see an ounce of fear. This leads into a surprise assistance from an ally. The move thrusts the King back to his kingdom with a heavy heart & mind.
The fallout results in a new direction for Wakanda. Knowing the Maker is coming, T’Challa’s dialogue offers hope. It inspires as much as recharges the citizens of the powerful nation. The message shows huge growth as actions speak. The moment with Okoye and him is a quiet reflection on where their lives lead. Events swing into a definitive final act. There are many moves going down but none greater than a promise made. The ramifications are huge when called upon. Heavy is the crown for a fallen king.
Caselli & Curiel open with a full shot of the Progenitors staring down T’Challa. The mood is easily uncomfortable as they try negotiating their power struggle. Readers see how passionate T’Challa is about holding his ground. The changes in structure of his opposition jumps out as the argument leans his way. This welcomes a return back to Wakanda for the King with much to ponder of the fate of his nation.
The following pages cover much ground with smaller panels. They walk the audience through the rebuilding phase of Wakanda as T’Challa readies his message. As the people hear his words, their reactions cover many emotions. It is understandable with the Maker coming back. The moments with Okoye are noteworthy as she processes what their future holds. This leads to a firey proclamation to light the fire of the people’s hearts. This leads to the more tragic ending. The factor of time weighs on a troubled mind. It results in a final look at the realization of what is surrounding the king. A promise is made and a full final page closes events for now and forever, should this truly be the end.
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
T’Challa’s last stand with the Progenitors leads to a rebirth and road into a future uncertain in this series conclusion. Hill pends an emotionally driven look at a King’s uncontrollable destiny. Caselli & Curiel provide excellent images to move this story and its’ characters into the final endgame. A superb sendoff for this vision of the Ulitmate Universe.
