*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Kirkman doesn’t delay in bringing up one of the darkest moments of this series. Seeing the lifeless body of Bumblebee makes an instant statement. The dialogue surrounding brings forth a somber tone of this conflict. It is noteworthy about a possible way to bring back the fallen hero thrown into the conversation. That takes a back seat as more of Prime’s forces reacquaint themselves into the battle. This isn’t the only time emotions run high for this chapter.
Ultra Magnus makes his feeling known when coming across General Flagg. The dialogue is tense but conveys the months of torture endured under his watch. Flagg’s response is slick and politcal as the readers expect. There is a fine line to walk between human and Transformers at this stage. Flagg uses this to his advantage for this round. The moment to watch is Thundercracker. His conversation with Optimus Prime reflects what he has gone through and a possible future. This results in an awkward but solid turning point. Jury is still out on where this plot leads but Prime takes over to close up show. A decree is cast that leaves no doubt for readers. Add in the small Cybertronian saga and there’s much for fans to savor on this read.
Mora and Spicer open with a very loud and painful statement> The full page image of a lifeless Bumblebee speaks volumes to the audience. It ushers in a meeting between allies. The body language reflects what they have all endured during the conflicts with Decepticons. Once the humans become involved, the story takes a different feel. This especially applies to Magnus/Flagg. A smaller panel shows the larger conversation coming into play.
Optimus and Thundercracker’s talk spotlights the difference in philosophies. The former Decepticon’s expressions are very noteworthy. Readers will be guessing if they are truly genuine or not. One interaction that isn’t uncertain is Flagg and Miles Mayhem. Readers watch as their encounter spirals into an unexpected path. Once events loop back to Thundercracker, a full image showcases his new status. It’s complimented by a magnificent full page of a refocused Optimus Prime. The Cybertronian times are brief but end events on a dangerous note. The last page offers a forgotten soul hovering in the shadows. Readers should expect much conversation with how this book wraps up. This art team just doesn’t miss.
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
The new stat quo of humans and Transformers boil over with old wounds reopened for this chapter. Kirkman mixes in human political maneuvering around a redemption plot with his writing. Mora and Spicer elevate each scene with their incredible art. This series never ceases to impress and amaze fans with each new release.
