The Will Of Doom #1 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 1st issue of The Will Of Doom from Marvel Comics!

Marvel is up for something BIG when Armageddon comes out next year! First they started with Doctor Doom gaining the powers of the Sorcerer Supreme & everything that came with it. After putting Peter Parker through a gauntlet of challenges that would be a -tall task for any hero (read the 8th Deaths of Spider-Man story for more info), he then turned around and set the entire world under his rule under the rule of 1 nation called United Latveria. Then after involving the X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight & the Champions (read the One World Under Doom story for more) in a wild battle, Valeria Richards sacrifices herself. Doom, then goes to none other than the living tribunal to try to bring her back in exchange for his own life. This then leads to Doctor Doom’s last will & testament appearing before Reed Richards. With all that in mind, let’s jump into it!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

This story isn’t like your typical story you might expect from Chip Zdarksy or Marvel. It feels like a conclusion to one chapter of the story while simultaneously being a transitional part of the overall story. The 616 universe has been through A LOT in the recent months as I mentioned before. So it plays out as a resolution from the shocking end to One World Under Doom. Doom has left EVERYTHING Valeria in his will, and there are portions of the general population that don’t believe Doom is actually gone.

While all that is going on you have the situation developing in Latveria where it’s now a country without a leader and none other than General Ross decided to plant a United States flag on Latverian soil. From there the action really kicks into gear when a contingency plan from Doom kicks in and there’s a Doombot uprising.

The action sequences have that classic Marvel, big action feel to it and it delivers on every level. The real interesting part, and the ones that I’m sure are going to come to play a part in upcoming Marvel issues involve General Ross & Valeria. Regarding Ross, there’s NOTHING good that will come from that conversation he has in the epilogue. It’s like tossing an already lit powder keg into a room full of dynamite, it’s going to explode and come back to haunt the powers that be. Plus there’s the bit with Valeria, and while it makes sense on one level. On another, I can’t help but think it’s a mistake to do that. We’ll see, but it sets up incredibly interestingly for the next few months.

The Artwork

Cafu & David Curiel really did a tremendous job with the artwork in the issue. It’s an important issue that is going to prove very integral in the next couple of months. The action sequences are really incredibly drawn, and the scenes not involving action are handled with an great level of care and passion.

FINAL POINT: Chip Zdarsky pens an intriguing story that left me wanting to know what’s coming next, which is always the sign of a good story. He sets up several plot points that should be very intriguing to see play out. Together with artwork that is top notch, this is an issue you should have on your reading list this week.

Overall Grade: 8/10
