The Ultimates #21 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 21st issue of The Ultimates from Marvel Comics!

Things are at an absolute fever pitch! Battles are taking place all across the United States, and it’s all in an attempt to stop The Maker. However it’s not just The Ultimates fighting against The Maker, Luke Cage is leading a group into battle! So let’s jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics // The Ultimates #21 by Deniz Camp (Writer), Pere Perez Artist), Federico Blee (Color Artist), VC’s Travis Lanham (Letterer), Dike Ruan & Moreno Dinisio (Cover) is a solid issue that adds an interesting twist to the ongoing story.

The Story

I really liked the change of scenery Deniz brought to this issue and it made for a nice change of pace. Considering how widespread the battle in this Ultimate universe has been thus far, it makes sense to see just what else is going on.

Seeing Luke Cager with the New Avengers take on the Maker’s forces was really awesome to see. I appreciated the set up for it, and that it wasn’t just a situation where they’re all there and decide to unite and do the right thing. It made for some great storytelling that was fun to read.

Along with that, you have a VERY interesting side story going on with two members of the Hellfire Club, and to me this was the real interesting part of the issue. I’m a big fan of backroom politic stories, and this part of the story was full of it. It’s sure to set up some interesting story points, and not to mention that ending! There’s sure to be some fallout from that ending! Wow!

The Artwork

Pere Perez & Federico Blee really did a great job with the artwork in this issue. The battle sequences were nothing short of chaotic, and the artwork did a lot to help convey that chaos. Also the use of color is tremendous and really does a great job conveying how chaotic it was. You’re getting a lot thrown in your face but it doesn’t feel overwhelming, and it works so well.

FINAL POINT: This issue is a nice change of pace and sheds some light on the other characters in this universe. It’s a story that is an absolute page turner thanks to Deniz Camp. Together with artwork that is spectacular, this is an issue you don’t want to miss.

Overall Grade: 8/10
