IRON MAN #2 by Joshua Williamson, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard, & Joe Caramagna (MARVEL COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
.Williamson opens with a throwback to the early days of Masque and Stark. To say it’s complicated is an understatement. The writing unveils their unique courtship. This spins into present day. Captain America stops by just in time to take out some Dreadsquires. It’s a classic moment between the pair. Williamson dials into the MCU version of Tony with the dialogue. His courtship with Luna is a moment that doesn’t sit well with Cap as they’re fighting the bad guys. His cause for concern is brushed off by Tony. This teases more to come as Tony is clearly of his game.
Masque’s moves lead into more recruits for her mission. With the addition of Techno, the mood feels uneasy as they are being led away. It serves as a quick break before the spotlight goes to Pepper Potts and May. Their dialogue is perfect for breaking down Tony's actions. Readers watch as his search leads him to the city of Madripoor. Anyone well versed in Marvel lore knows this isn’t a scenic trip. Tony’s investigation leads him into more trouble but with a fun twist. A new player becomes involved but not how its’ expected. Another great turn to keep readers guessing. There’s so much win here and it’s only issue #2!
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!
Carnero & Woodard lock in on the past of Stark and Masque. The art shows the pair fighting by day and loving by night. A full image of their post “meeting” leads into a deep discussion. Fast forward to present, the mood is quite different. A fantastic two page spread brings out the action with Cap and Iron Man. Cap’s reaction to Tony’s dialogue is unintentionally funny. Readers can see how frustrated he’s getting with the armored Avenger. This never breaks even after the conflict is finished. The rest of the issue is a different tale.
Techno’s introduction gets a near full page image. His smirk spins into hurting the detainees to send a message from A.I.M. Readers see the horrific prison they now find themselves in. It serves to fire up the importance of Tony’s mission. The spilt panels shows the territory he’s covered before heading into Madripoor. Woodard’s coloring brings out the seediness of the crime city. Tony stands out from the crowd with his awkward look. It is very clear he’s out of place in the dive bar. Once a brief fight wraps, readers see a guest star in a very unlikely environment. A two page spread shows the techno “Ceaser” enjoying the benefits of his Rome. This mood doesn’t last long. The final full page leaves quite the impression as Tony’s quest just got more complicated.
FINAL GRADE: 9
Pressure makes diamonds out of coal, but what does it do with Iron? Tony Stark is about to find out as his search for A.I.M. prisoners takes a drastic turn. Williamson doubles down on the complex persona of Stark. Carnero & Woodard provide impressive imagery to the technological backdrop. The Armored Avenger series is delivering non-stop action with no signs of slowing down!
