The Ultimates #20 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 20th issue of The Ultimates from Marvel Comics!

Our heroes are in their most desperate battle yet! The Maker’s plan for his return has begun and our heroes are in an all out battle to stop him and save the universe! But with some new players on the board, will it be enough to make a difference? Let’s jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics // The Ultimates #20 by Deniz Camp (Writer), Phil Noto (Artist), Edgar Delgado (Color Artist), VC’s Travis Lanham (Letterer), Dike Ruan & Moreno Dinisio (Cover) is a great issue that sets up for what’s sure to be a climactic battle

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

Deniz Camp really did a great job with the story inside the issue because it really set things up in a very nice way while also raising the stakes. There’s a LOT going on in the new version of the Ultimates universe so to keep things relatively simply is a great move on Deniz Camp’s part.

The issue primarily focuses on what’s going on with The Ultimates and the newest addition to the roster and trying to repair the damage that was done in the prior issue. Camp does a fantastic job raising the stakes and showing us just how cornered our heroes really are. The fact that Captain America is only given an 8% chance of survival is crazy to think of, but it’s those kind of stakes they’re all facing.

We also get a little bit of a backstory (visually) about this universe’s version of The Vision while he’s doing his best to help our heroes. There isn’t a whole lot to go on story wise, because there isn’t a lot of explanation given. However there are some glimpses of the life that was before Visions awakening.

The best part is the battle against Nick Fury & H.A.N.D. because oh my goodness it might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in a while in a comic. When you’re dealing with a force as large as the one Fury is you have to come up with a creative way to take him on and man oh man did Deniz Camp & the entire crew come up with a VERY creative way to do so.

Ultimately our heroes might be down, but they’re not out. The ending of the issue certainly conveys the message that the battle is not over and that it’s just beginning.

The Artwork

Phil Noto & Edgar Delgado really did a great job with the artwork. Phil Noto is one of the best artists in all of comics right now, Together with Edgar Delgado they really help elevate a tremendous story with their artwork. The use of color is tremendous and really does a great job conveying how dark things appear to be, and I don’t mean in the literal sense. Also I have to reiterate that the method used to take on Fury was amazing, and the way it was brought about & brought online was incredible. I was not expecting something like that, but it worked so well given the scope of the battle.

FINAL POINT: This issue really is one of the best one’s you’ll read this week, and is one that sets up the next few issues incredibly. It’s a story better that is the gold standard right now, and artwork that should win every award. This is a series you truly do not want to miss out on!

Overall Grade: 10/10
