THE PERIL OF THE BRUTAL DARK: AN EZRA CAIN MYSTERY #6 by Chris Condon, Jacob Phillips & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Condon pens an exciting chapter from start to finish, mirroring the reluctant lead character. Sandy’s frantic calls for help elevate an already tense situation. Once attention goes to Cain’s aerial combat, the mood hits its’ breaking point. Cain’s monologue to himself shows his flaws and uncertainty into what’s now his personal mission. The result draws out a hero from an unlikely source.

Readers watch as luck plays a huge role in Cain’s success. It gives new air beneath his broken wings. Huber’s insanity takes a larger role aboard the blimp. His dialogue doesn’t waste air. It pushes his narrative forward with no regards. The writing shows the error in this judgement as events start crashing out. Cain can only watch as the scenes play out from a distance. This leads into a strong finish with a great twist ending. What started out as a loser down on his luck might be the start of the next great patriotic hero. Regardless, Condon pens an amazing story.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Phillips spares no expends on delivering huge risks. The only calm points is Sandy’s call for assistance. Her looks of terror swell the pages as Cain flies blind in the sky. His reactions show the fear trying to creep in. Knowing what’s at stake, there’s no time to let it sink further. Panels soar to new levels as the action scenes take hold. Once Huber takes the scenes, his delusional mannerisms take center stage.

This leads into sheer disarray as his plans take a detour in execution. The coloring in these panels spiral out of control fast. It escalates the frantic scene and ultimate failure. Cain’s quiet grin is perfect as he watches events unfold. This moves events to a speedier finish. Sandy’s rescue reflects the audience’s curiosity. The rescue allows the story to ease into its closing portions. Mrs. Meyer’s parting time connects as it shows sorrow and needed closure to what transpired. The final panel is vintage in set-up, well placed for a true throwback saga.

FINAL GRADE: 9.3

The Brutal Dark is poised to strike but Ezra Cain is flying into the heart of danger in this exciting chapter. Condon wraps up events with a direct shot of intensity. Phillips’ art takes readers on a roller-coaster ride of emotions. A great “so long for now”, but definitely not “goodbye forever”.
