SUPERMAN #40 (DC COMICS)

CK is in way over his head!

Manchester Black has returned from the dead, well….sort of. He’s looking at the new “Superman” as a way back to the living.

To say things are complicated is an understatement!

SUPERMAN #40 by Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez & Ariana Maher concludes this wild showdown!

Let’s take a deeper dive into this madness!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson goes into some insane directions for this chapter. Black’s attack is complicated as he pushes Prime’s buttons too far. Knowing he is a shell of the original, Prime is an easy target. This moves their fight into breaking barriers and landing into his new comic shop. Readers watch as the fight spirals into different spaces.

All themes center around the connection with comics and what it relates to. The writing is fun dealing with this troupe. When it needs to be serious, Williamson unloads the emotional baggage. It results in a crazy finish and even better parting space. CK’s journey has been a wild one and seeing where his “redemption” plays now is gonna be box office.

Mora and Sánchez bring out the zaniness of Prime’s world while keeping a serious tone. After a nine panel grid open, a gorgeous two page splash unlocks the next round of combat. It leads into more wild action as the fight crosses over into ‘the real world” at the comic shop. Panels unload on the quirkiness of comic fights to a thunderous point. This leads CK to cut a traditional heroic speech. The fallout leads into a bold full shot of Prime unloading his arsenal to stop Black. Readers watch as the best plans fall a certain way. The epilogue is what is needed for CK to progress. How his journey takes off from here is going to connect as much as the art did here.

FINAL GRADE: 9.3

Williamson, Mora and Sanchez roll the dice in walking a fine line of genius and insanity with CK’s heroic methods. Another display of high level storytelling for a very polarizing character.
