THE NICE HOUSE BY THE SEA #8 by James Tynion IV, Álvaro Martínez Bueno, Jordie Bellaire, & AndWorld Design (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Tynion begins events with Molly speaking the past into existence. The past moments with Walter unveil their complex relationship. It adds more weight into an already crushing scenario. The result is a look into a period of time that dug a hole onto a soul. This air of sadness quickly moves into the horrors at hand. Readers watch as the attacks start commencing. It is unapologetic in delivery. There is some sense of sanity coming from Cherri Campbell. Her words hit directly into the intended parties and audience. Where it leads to is more difficult.
Norah and Max’s discussion unlocks an ugly truth of humans. Tynion taps into the primal nature of survival in description. The dialogue is cold but effective in point. Readers watch as a moment commences that switchs up dynamics. This aura carries into a meeting of minds. It results in more questions than answers. At bare minimum, it delays the desperate lengths one goes to try for help. One character shows the self-destructive nature to continue forward in this game with a terrifying act. This moves events into two phases for closing. One is a more natural move involving a heavy decision. The other closes up shop with a puzzling finish. No matter what path, there will be no easy winners here.
Bueno and Bellaire begin with Molly’s dire view of the past. A series of two page spreads show the bright lights and big city energy of this portion. Walter’s fractured reactions show little response into the words being told. It adds a ghostly feel to the current state of affairs. This might be the only remorseful portion of the book. From here, the art launches into the violent plans of Victor to take out the other house.
Readers watch as the brutality shows no pause in panels. The art holds nothing back as the downward spiral commences. This leads into a more dark conversation between Norah and Max. Bellaire’s coloring makes these panels explode off the pages. Once events revolt back to the main story, the art keeps focus on the unstable dynamics. Each character has a differing stance on what’s going on. None might be more bolder than David. Readers had better prepare for his moment as the methods he uses to gain his mouth back are gruesome. This leads into a more straigh-forward close. Two themes walk parallel to finish. The latter teases a more dire situation with a chilling last panel. Exceptional work per usual here.
FINAL GRADE: 9.4
The violence comes to one house with survival as the top prize in this latest chapter. Tynion ushers in horror elements with the unabashed look of humanity . Bueno and Bellaire never shy away from taking this tale into uncharted territory. This series continues to impress with every issue.
