*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Tynion opens with Reginald talking in the darkness. The dialogue is filled with sorrow as the painter reflects on what he felt. This spins into a colorful exploration with Walter. Readers watch as the groundwork is laid out for what comes next. Walter’s awkward takes cause some uneasiness but ultimately pushes forward. In dealing with the powerful being, Reginald is tentative to speak up. This comes off much better with his interaction with Ryan.
At this stage, the truth starts coming to life. The writing unlocks a trapped soul with much to tell. Oliver’s dialogue hints at the terrors coming. Once the spotlight shifts, it becomes crystal clear there is an initiation of the endgame. With the jeopardy of one house falling, Tynion presses on the choices made. Readers watch as one house makes a violent statement in their quest to survive. Consequences are grave. This is never more clear than the interaction between Hector and David. The slow reveal results in a horrific conclusion. There is no turning back on what unfolds now. Brace for a final page than swings momentum into the hands of a madman.
Bueno and Bellaire begin with a dark look at the world through Reginald’s eyes. The haunting art gives way to a mind-blowing experience with Walter. Colors are exploding in the epicenter of their world. The vibrant two page spread unlocks Walter’s visions before segwaying to a spectacular full image. This returns events to Reginald and Ryan on their journey. Where it leads is a bit of a surprise. Luckily their canine companion knows the way.
Once in their new location, the scenery is a vision of a peaceful town on the sea. Readers watch as they discover someone trapped on this inside world. Oliver’s dialogue is met with some hesitancy as his fears come into focus. A full page image of David’s narration starts up a build to a deadly confrontation. The art presents the calm before the storm with intimate glimpses of fleeting happiness. A two page spread unveils the horrors that have set in. It segways into a confrontation between David and Hector. This meeting is aggressive as one takes things up a few notches. Another two page spread peels back the layers of one notable figure. It spirals into a chilling final full image. Talk about a mic drop.
FINAL GRADE: 9.2
The end is near as one house makes a move that there is no coming back from. Tynion pens a tale of horror and hope with magnificent writing. Bueno and Bellaire build gorgeous art depicting the chaos. This series carries a high level of storytelling few can match. Don’t miss this return!
