THE MORTAL THOR #7 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 6th issue of The Mortal Thor from Marvel Comics!

The story thus far has been about Sigurd Jarlson, the man who looks like Thor and wields a hammer about as effectively as Thor does. Sigurd has been trying to just make a living and get by in his everyday life, but just about everyone is getting in his way to stop him. So surely things are getting better for him right?! So with that said, let’s jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics // The Mortal Thor #7 by Al Ewing (Writer), Pasqual Ferry (Artist), Matt Milla (Color Artist), VC's Joe Sabino (Letterer) & Alex Ross (Cover) is a great issue that escalates the mystery.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

Al Ewing really took an interesting turn in this issue, but one that worked and helped elevate the mystery surrounding everything to do with Sigurd. Oh and that ending? Just stunning!

The story is mostly self contained between Sigurd and Mr. Hyde. Sigurd’s story is a nice one, and a nice change of pace considering all the turmoil he’s been put through recently. Then the other side is involving Mr. Hyde, who is another character Al Ewing is pulling into the story from DEEP inside the Marvel lexicon. Hyde was created by Stan Lee and Don Heck, who first appeared in Journey Into Mystery #99 in 1963! It’s a great twist between the two, and of course the two come to blows in spectacular fashion.

However, the most interesting part of the story is the final two pages where we see a mysterious individual scheming. Just what his goals are is anyone’s guess. However it appears to be he’s the one pulling the strings against Sigurd and putting him through the wringer. The issue ends spectacularly with a tease for a character that first appeared in 1963!

The Artwork

Pasqual Ferry & Matt Milla continue to blow me away with just how good their artwork is in the series. I really liked how they were able to create some unique looks between Sigurd & Mr. Hyde but still blended it beautifully. The action sequences particularly were some of the best one’s I’ve seen in recent weeks.

FINAL POINT: Al Ewing continues to blow me away with how deep into the Marvel lexicon he’s digging for this story. It’s really making for great storytelling and keeping you on your toes. You really don’t know who’s going to show up next, and it makes for some great storytelling! Along with that is some artwork that is out of this world. You really shouldn’t skip out on this for any reason!

Overall Grade: 9/10
