INGLORIOUS X-FORCE #2 by Tim Seeley, Michael Sta. Maria, Romulo Fajardo Jr. & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Seeley brings back a X-Force staple in the MLF Readers watch the message their new leader Kali Sez presents. The dialogue is cold in delivery. It’s a stark contrast from Boom-Boom. Two issues in and I’m not a fan of how she is written. More times than not, she just doesn’t hit for comic relief involving Daken which is the intended purpose. Outside of that, the personalities clash works to make this team uneasy. The “training” with Archangel and Daken works to feature this. Cable’s persona shines above all. Once he’s done re-processing events, the story picks up steam.
The Blasphemy Cartel serves as a unique challenge for the group. There’s plenty of action to go around. One factor that feels very fresh is dabbling into the supernatural aspect of this threat. Readers watch as Cable’s hidden agenda is more that freeing up a captive soul. It serves as a benchmark for ruling out suspects. This kind of activity is VERY reminiscent of the early X-Force days. The fallout serves to split the groups structure even further. It’s a new take that leaves many questions still yet to be answered. Well worth the read.

Sta. Maria & Fajardo Jr. open with Kali Sez addressing the masses. The television set-up gives the message some importance. This gives way to a full sparring session image. Archangel and Daken are not exactly pulling punches here. The two page spread of Cable’s assessment leaves some possibilities more open. It drives home the thought one of the heroes could do the unthinkable. After some more great action shots, Cable intervenes to end events. His presence just takes over any panel he’s in.
As the mission begins, action gets frantic. There is very little left back. From blood to strikes, it’s all on the table. This also for Cable to pay his dangerous game. Having Hellverine take over proves for a test of faith. Readers watch as the bloody challenge builds towards a tense finale. Questions of characters and morals flood the panels. It results in a strong finish with much emotion behind it. Trust issues with this team are glaring in the closing panels. It’s not supposed to be a happy ending by a longshot. The final image repeats a question going through readers heads. Hopefully next issue provides those answers.
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
Cable’s search for the truth tests the convictions of one member in the latest chapter. Seeley starts breaking the foundation down on this combustible team via the writing. Sta. Maria & Fajardo Jr.’s hold nothing back when it comes to the action. For anyone looking for a throwback vibe to the original X-Force, you’ve found your book.
