THE FURY OF FIRESTORM #7 (DC COMICS)

To save the world, Ronnie Raymond and Dr. Martin Stein paid the ultimate sacrifice.

With the Firestorm matrix becoming sentient, one of the most powerful forces in the DCU became corrupted. The being took dark liberties experimenting with humanity. Lives were lost. Secrets revealed. Danger pending from all directions.

It took the combined energy of Raymond and Stein to merge and take the matrix directly into the sun.

This ended one nightmare plaguing the world….or did it?

THE FURY OF FIRESTORM #7 by Jeff Lemire, Rafael de Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo & Lucas Gattoni (DC Comics) kicks off a brand new arc.

Let’s take a deeper dove into this chapter.

THE FURY OF FIRESTORM #6 by Jeff Lemire, Rafael de Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo & Lucas Gattoni (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Lemire spins more intrigue than expected with this new beginning. Seeing Firestorm taken off the board gives huge gravity to the sacrifices made last issue. Twisting it with a new evolution raises more questions as the world holds their breath again. Pairing the lost entity with a younger Ronnie teases many elements. The writing builds off the perceptions of reality to craft more tension while the story swings back to its’ most conflicted character.

Lorraine Reilly’s aftermath mirrors the readers as she tries to move forward. Her dialogue with Captain Atom and Mr. Terrific is venting her personal anger towards Firestorm’s demise. It captures the emotional weight of losing a loved one while deflecting the superhero themes connected. This escalates further when she sees Jason Rusch. Her frantic reaction connect while more drama unfolds with the Justice League. This pushes to a solid close with many lingering thoughts hovering. A strong welcome back to an ever-evolving situation.

De Latorre & Maiolo bring in the new Firestorm look with a catching half panel. Watching the imposing figure walk through town carries a horror sense of uneasiness in each turn. The exchanges with young Ronnie show the conflict of relearning life through one’s own eyes. It is curious in nature to where this all leads, but provides a steady pivoting point to a more pressing matter.

Reilly’s grilling from the Justice League is met with much pushback. The panels convey the business aspect of the League, even to a robotic level. Readers watch Reilly refusing to cave as she answers back. It helps to put all parties on their new paths. A solid full page image brings Atom and Terrific to confront the reborn powerhouse. Atom’s attack gets a nice boost from Gattoni’s lettering to add depth to their quick fight. The art fills in the emotional weight on Reilly’s shoulders when conversing with Rusch. This compliments the government involvement on bringing Firestorm in. It ushers in a wild closing with the final pages making bold full statements. Let the mystery continue once more!

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

Even death cannot stop The Nuclear Man returns with a dangerous aura around him. Lemire stages a shifting look at Firestorm’s void and rebirth. De Latorre & Maiolo keeps the crushing sense of loss and guarded optimism front and center with the art. A complex vision of one of DC’s most enigmatic heroes blazes a new path.
