THE FLASH #37 by Ryan North, Gavin Guidry, Adriano Lucas & Buddy Beaudoin (DC Comics)

North throws a case of ethics into play with varying results for this chapter. The issue is centering around a case of three events forthcoming. West’s thoughts are breaking down proper approaches akin to a Dark Knight in Gotham. The writing locks in on how West deducts the guilty parties and begins a pre-emptive strike. It runs very smoothly as the “evidence” is gathered but raises more questions. As events progress, the methods used makes the readers think about the morals behind them.
This steers into a turning point in West’s methods. North pens this as almost too perfect, with some solid quips in place. Readers watch as this leads into the major drama of the story. The meeting on Mount Everest is conflicting at best. Seeing the heroes bicker about West’s moves all gets overshadowed by Queen’s persistence to stop them at all costs. Once the culprit gets involved, the writing shifts places as more conflict comes about when West goes on the defensive. It leads into a shocking final act, where events expose consequences at a grave scale. The point may have taken a bit to get to but makes a much needed splash at the end.

Guidry and Lucas open with a full shot of West at work. The happy looks convey his excitement for his “flashes” working. This leads into the major events coming. Lucas’ coloring for the premonitions step up the detective work. The art follows suit with showcases the lengths West goes to stop these events. There’s a humorous look to some as he playfully walks a fine line of ethics in gathering info. The close-up concerning “Wind Man” is priceless.
Panels go into a stack formation for a few pages to show West’s crime-fighting at work. It leads into a happy portrait via full page. This transfers events to Mount Everest, where the mood is a bit more tense. Reactions to Queen’s argument sway from person to person. The only one which is hard to cypher (due to oxygen mask) is Queen, but his eyes give much away. As West approaches, the panels start tearing into his movement with more uncertainty behind them . This leads into three devastating pages to wrap up events with Beaudion’s letting putting a cherry on the explosive situation unfolding.
FINAL GRADE: 8.5
Wally West’s dreams turn into nightmares as the Justice League weighs in on his latest movement. North stages the ethics debate with a well structured script. Guidry and Lucas present the unique visions with excellent imagery. With great ambition comes grave consequences for the Scarlet Speedster. Don’t miss it.
