SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #13 by Dan Slott, Lucas Meyer,Giuliano Peratelli & Dave Sharpe (DC Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Slott plays into the campiness of the Superman mythos with this chapter. Watching the Donomans’ surveying Beppo and Bibbo proves traditional in set-up. The following “robbery” leads to Beppo showcasing his abilities. Readers watch as a tragic action unloads his anger. This also provides a solid pivot point to young Jon Kent. Reliving the nightmares Ultraman put him through grounds the tale before allowing the elder Kent to debut. He provides some quick heroic action before moving into the main event.
The Kents’ encounter with Beppo falls into familiar territory. Readers watch as the young Kent acts brashly. This actions is reciprocated by Beppo tenfold. Through the chaotic brawl, Tomorrow Man makes a very tricky discovery. It quickly is overshadowed by more combat. Slott handles the rage in a very reflective stance. Having T.M. watch his younger self react offers a new perspective of events. This moves to a steady finish, but not one without pause. The closing monologue leaves readers with some themes to absorb before next isue. A very straight-forward tale in delivery and structure.

Meyer & Peratelli begin with a more loose vision of super-villains at work. Bibbo’s playful attention to his new sidekick is quickly dampered by the assault. Panels move swiftly as a shocking action takes place. This transfers Beppo’s emotions to a dark place. A solid full page delivers some disturbing flashbacks which leads to an inevitable confrontation. Once events move to Young Jon, a full page shot of Ultraman’s torture comes to light. There’s plenty of emotional looks thrown by not only Jon, but Lois Lane as well. This causes a call to Tomorrow Man, who’s ties up in his own issues.
Readers watch as a near full shot shows T.M. hoisting a crashed boat to safety. The family meet-up transitions into an investigation via half page panel. This leads into a wild meeting between all parties. Panels pour with heated action. One results in a major discovery. Another full page displays the youthful anger of Jon Kent unloading. It is a very intense visual knowing what he’s capable of. Another full shot shows T.M.’s resolution to matters at hand. It allows for the story to cap off on a good point. The final panel is deceptive in nature with one character having much to cypher through moving forward.
FINAL GRADE: 8
Beppo’s arrival in Metropolis brings an unexpected fight to the Superboys. Slott’s script is solidly built to maximize Beppo’s impact. Meyer & Peratelli provide a detailed look at the youngest Kent through his future self’s eyes. “Unlimited” provides a solid balance of classic themes with modern twists. It appeals to the Superman fans in all of us.
