Porter doesn’t wait to bring the action as Luthor handles the WildC.A.T.S. and General Lane. The writing feeds into this over-confidence leading to a shallow victory. This provides a great pivoting point to Jor-El’s reflective time. His conversation with Martha Kent exposes his self doubts through a strong flashback to Krypton. It is countered with a testimonial by Martha. Resetting the focus turns key as Luthor’s schemes grow larger.
Readers watch as his confrontation with Constantine is matched with cutting dialogue. It unravels Luthor’s bravado long enough to show a weakness forming. It also opens the door for a strong look at General Lane and his daughter Lois hashing out the present. The writing shows both characters at a desperate point while moving to the closing battle. Once here, the action picks up with Jor-El finding Luthor. The additional X factor flip-flops direction into a high stakes point. This brings the close to a solid apex till next round’s finale. Great build-up for the main event.

Earls and Filardi showcase Luthor’s new abilities with a defiant opening. The non-chalant way of dealing with Gen. Lane speaks volumes onto where his mind is. Gattoni’s lettering drives this point home as Lane falls in his wake. Panels ease into a more calm state as Jor-El and Martha discusses events. The throwback to Krypton provides some depth and sorrow to Jor-El’s plight. While fast, the break gives readers time to brace for more intense action on the way.
The fight with Constantine ends with a loud half page shot. It follows Hex as he’s relishing in his latest victory. Once pivoted to the Lanes, the art reflects the deep wounds inflicted from the past. Earls nails the emotional weight of this interaction to move General Lane into a new spot. This leads to a furious final act. Luthor and Jor-El shows ruthless attacks as they press forward. It becomes more complicated as the pages move to finihs. Another striking full shot teases more danger as the end is fast approaching.
FINAL GRADE: 8.6
Jor-El’s latest stand might be his last as Hex Luthor has come back with new powers and grave intentions. Porter brings out the gravity of Luthor’s actions with solid writing. Earls, Filardi and Gattoni bring the action with stunning panels. A Superman saga that’s in its’ own league.
